Wow. That's the baseline numbers, and doesn't include the A3 at all.

I bet it's closer to 125k by the time all is said and done, all HDDVD player models combined.

Just to play devil's advocate, couldn't you also look at it as Toshiba having 90,000 units of backstock that they wanted to dump to make way for the A3?

That's likely a part of it, but the meat of the matter is that they sold all that back-stock, as opposed to just having it sit on shelves.

Call it what you will, but when the 2008 model Ford comes on the lot, you need to get rid of the 2007 Ford and so on and so forth. As long as they're able to keep that cycle moving, its positive progress.

Sure, there was likely overstock on $400 HD-DVD players, but the past couple of weeks have shown that there is a hearty appetite out there for hi-def players in the $100-$200 range, and Toshiba was smart enough to capitalize on that. Now they've picked up a lot of momentum, and we'll see what happens next.

I think what's even more crucial to the war right now is that this weekend sale has EVERYONE talking about HD-DVD. The regular consumers. The retail stores. The media. They are ALL buzzing like crazy about HD DVD.

The publicity this sale generated is immeasurable, and of immeasurable value to HD DVD.

I understood massive amounts of these were bought by early adopters that already owned players and are to be given away at Christmas to all their fathers and mothers as presents.
Now, I bet those old-timers can't wait to buy and rent lots and lots of those neato 34.99 HD discs to watch on their players during their last years on Earth !

Just kidding, I 'd wish we could buy those 99 dollar players including 5 free films overhere in Europe, God damnit.

Sure, but that doesn't take away from the fact that thats close to 100,000 HD-DVD players that will now crave HD-DVDs. Even taking into account a conservative estimate that a fifth of those players went to homes that already had HD-DVD players, an extra player would probably promote more HD-DVD purchases among that set also...
