Should i get a HD-DVD just for Transformers?

I can't help it.....i want to see Transformers in HD but the thought of spending $300 on a player just to watch one movie and in an unknown winning format war.....sigh.....helpppp!!!

steebo777 10-15-07 10:54 AM

You could always get the Toshiba A2 for under $200 at Walmart if you don't want to drop the $300 on the A3.

I personally can't wait to see Megan Fox and some Transformers fighting in HD :D
Imagine how bad it would suck if you couldn't skip chapters in this to go to those scenes (like a Lynch flick).

PopcornTreeCt 10-15-07 10:55 AM

If you really like the movie then I would say yes.

stingermck 10-15-07 10:56 AM

Yup. I got mine for Batman Begins, and Superman Returns. And then all the other amazing movies out there.

bunkaroo 10-15-07 10:57 AM

I wouldn't get it JUST for Transformers, but there's got to be other titles you'd want to see on HD DVD. Not to mention any of the Toshiba players should be a pretty decent upconverting player if you don't already have one.

Arrrghhh!!!!! Damn you hot chick and robots!!!!

The Bus 10-15-07 11:00 AM

Surely there have to be other movies that would appeal to you.

Then again, I spent $530 to get Lives of Others in BD, so... yours is a steal in comparison.

Hate to say this but.......i am on the verge of going to my car and heading out to the store to get one!!! So do most buy movies for both formats then?

Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. 10-15-07 11:05 AM

it would not be a good decision. can you rent players anywhere?

Bluelitespecial 10-15-07 11:06 AM

I have a PS3 for blueray, and I am trying to hold off on transformers so I can buy an HD-DVD player once I buy an HDTV in the next few months.

Fixed.

Only reason to watch this turd of a film. And just to save the next poster time I'll even add my own:

:crap:

Oh yeah, I went there. I'm bored at work, live with it.

vhgong 10-15-07 11:11 AM

Is the porn industry embracing HD or Blu Ray....that could be the deciding factor i think!!! :p

There is no end in sight to the HD war. So yes, grab an A2 for $200 bucks with a buttload of free movies w/MIR and enjoy the show.

vcuram 10-15-07 11:15 AM

Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to see a Michael Bay film. So, I definitely wouldn't buy new hardware to see this film. That said, there are lots of other great titles that you can only get with HD-DVD.

RichC2 10-15-07 11:40 AM

I say yes, buy the A2 ($200) get the 5 free movies, and get Transformers, you won't feel ripped off at all (Granted you have a decent setup).

pricdews 10-15-07 11:45 AM

If you're truly only interest in the 1 title, ask yourself this ...

If Transformes came out on BluRay and was priced at $220-$320, would you buy it?

You've made a good point. I'll probably wait. Its the impulse geek thing taking over a few mins ago.

i agree with this. there is no end in sight to this format war. inevitably there will be other titles that you want in HD. if you have the money, save yourself from all this format war silliness and go dual-format.

However, he doesnt have to ask himself that because the reality is it is on HD-DVD, not BD... Im not saying do it, but I know Ill be enjoying it tommorrow :D

mdc3000 10-15-07 03:35 PM

DO IT. Buy the A2 for cheap, get the 5 free discs and grab Transformers...then you can get all the other GREAT movies currently out or coming soon...the prices are right, there are good offers out there and tomorrow, we'll all be watching Optimus Prime kick some HD ass.

Drexl 10-15-07 04:37 PM

One of us!
One of us!
One of us!
One of us!

Seriously though, there must be other titles you would like to get. Try to find at least 5 or so.

wewantflair 10-15-07 04:58 PM

It's 200 bucks. If that doesn't make you cringe, buy it. If it does, apply for a credit card. :p

Can't believe you're getting this excited over a Michael Bay movie :D

Transformers will look great in HD but so does Hot Fuzz, 300, Blood Diamond & Alexander just to name a few. Now is as good a time as any to make the plunge

chanster 10-15-07 05:14 PM

I got an A2 hoping to see a nip shot of Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. That justified the $250 right there.

BuckNaked2k 10-15-07 05:19 PM

For $198 at WalMart, the A2 is a steal.

You'll get to see your movie, and if you never again buy an HD DVD, you still have one awesome backwards-compatible, up-converting DVD player.

Gizmo 10-15-07 05:33 PM

Wal-Mart. $198, baby.

matrixrok9 10-15-07 05:48 PM

If you buy the A2,you better make sure you have a receiver capable of receiving HDMI audio to fully take advantage of HD.

I bought a used HD A1 which has analog output for lossless sound and it didn't work when I plugged it in. It's being repaired at the shop right now for free since it's still under warranty. Having said that, I don't suggest buying a used HD DVD player because they're still buggy as hell.

vhgong 10-15-07 07:02 PM

Bastards!!!! Just bought a Toshiba A2 2 hours ago, bought King Kong and Batman as well. Hook it up and........i am all ready for the Transformers tomorrow!!!! I have to say, the picture sure look crisps and clean  .
Can't use HDMI with my receiver(old receiver, no hdmi) for sound but opting for optical instead.
Can't wait for tomorrow!!!!!!

PopcornTreeCt 10-15-07 07:03 PM

Congrats!

Drexl 10-15-07 07:07 PM

Is this your first HD disc player, or did you have BD as well?

Got a PS3......but i wanted to wait it out initially. Unfortunately, Transformers nudge me over. Damn you Paramount!!!! I still want Blu Ray to succeed though....oh well, its all about the content.

 Same here about everything but Transformers. Bourne Ultimatum being exclusive is the one that pushed me to get the HD drive.

DeanoBKN 10-15-07 09:33 PM

I got mine just for Casino...

RichC2 10-15-07 09:45 PM

I got mine because I want it to destroy Blu-ray....

Okay, that and Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz.

Teremei 10-15-07 10:17 PM

IMO, for just one movie. No. If you see 10-20 HD DVD only movies you like, then go for it.

Yeah....but i just have to see how good it was.....so i bought the other 2. ><

rebel-scum78 10-16-07 07:12 AM

If it's really niggling at you, then do it!! Do bear in mind the other wealth of HD DVD titles, I didn't realise how many films were on the format that I liked. I've only been Hi Def capable from the start of Sept, but I have amassed the following:

1. 300
2. Batman Begins
3. Bourne Supremacy
4. Brotherhood Of The Wolf
5. Children Of Men
6. Chronicles Of Riddick
7. Constantine
8. FATF: Tokyo Drift
9. Hot Fuzz
10. The Host
11. Hulk
12. The Island
13. Knocked Up
14. Mad Max 2
15. Matrix Trilogy
16. M:I:III
17. Serenity
18. Shaun Of The Dead
19. Smokin' Aces
21. Sky Captain
22. Terminator III
23. Troy: DC
24. V For Vendetta

My own copy of Transformers is in the mail, but I'm also waiting on Payback: DC, A Scanner Darkly and some other bits and pieces. I'm jealous of Americans as you guys can pick up players and software dirt cheap while here in the UK the prices are scandalous. That's not to say that I don't import, but there are some titles that I have preordered the UK version for the shear convenience of spreading out cost up to the end of the year.

These would be things like Pitch Black, The Frighteners, The Big Lebowski, The Bourne Identity AND The Bourne Ultimatum. For U.S titles at the moment, I'm waiting on Face/Off, Blade Runner 5 disc set and The Omega Man. Damn, it's gonna be a busy year and expensive end of year.

TGM 10-16-07 07:25 AM

Well if "Fast and the Furious:Tokyo drift" doesn't sell ya on HD-DVD, nothin' will!

I keed, I keed.
