They're not going to use the original cover because it didn't have Jude Law.

A bunch of $15 MSRP Blu-Ray coming from Echo Bridge (listed at DVDEmpire) all for 4/1. Guess it doesn't cost that much to press on BD after all.

10.1 Apocalypse: The Complete Miniseries
Artie Lange's Beer League
Blackbeard
Category 7: End of The World
Curse of King Tut's Tomb: The Complete Miniseries
The Last Sentinel

Artie Lange's Beer League

Awesome news! I never expected this to be released, ever. Hopefully it is better quality than the shitty non-anamorphic DVD.

I'm actually kinda worried that Gatacca will be like a couple other where many people felt the Superbit was better than the BD.

My DVD was anamorphic.....did they make more than one version?

At that cheap price I might just have to snag the Blu-ray...

Wanted to post some info on There Will Be Blood

This is from PT Anderson's cigarettes and red vines site:

> there is no commentary track, nor will there ever probably be one again. paul mentioned to me how alot of the buzz has been taken from doing them because people quote them back verbatim to him in interviews and fun/flippant comments are regarded as gospel. (not a quote, but the gist of what was said)

> the behind-the-scenes footage we reported ages ago that was being shot by austin lynch will, as of this point, not be included on the dvd as a ‘that moment’ style feature. paul said it all turned out wonderfully but that the footage might take away the magic of the film itself saying “it’s just a bunch of people in a desert standing around making a movie.”

> there is an extremely old documentary/footage that was found about mining and oil production from the era. they are planning to cut in jonny greenwood’s score over top of it and make a presentation out of it.

+

I can appreciate the decision for the lack of a commentary track even though I enjoyed the heck out his track on Boogie Nights. Hope this gets announced soon.

Drexl 02-01-08 02:25 AM

Damn, I enjoyed his Boogie Nights commentary too. I think it's still my favorite. I hope Paramount does it right.

It isn't anamorphic, just the letterbox flag is set so it stretches it properly.

That's pretty intriguing. My kneejerk reaction was that these were DVDs getting a price drop, and DVD Empire mislabeled them as being on Blu-ray, but these were already pretty cheap DVDs (Beer League has a $6.99 MSRP!), so that couldn't be it. I'm still skeptical just because I can't find anything about this anywhere else -- nothing even about the company exploring high-def -- but if it's true, it is nice to hear.

For anyone who's interested -- Echo Bridge's DVDs that've been reviewed here at DVD Talk

Edited to add: these just showed up on Amazon too, so maybe it is legit...?

Gattaca blu-ray update:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...n_Upgrade/1420

'Gattaca' Blu-ray Gets an Upgrade
Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET

Sony has announced updated specs for 'Gattaca,' which will hit Blu-ray this March with all-new exclusive bonus features and slick new cover art.

As we've previously reported, the studio recently re-announced 'Gattaca' for Blu-ray release on March 11 (almost a full year after it previously delayed the title from its high-def schedule).

Though initial details indicated a direct port of the previously released standard-def DVD version, new just-issued specs see Sony redubbing the Blu-ray as a full-fledged special edition, with several never-before-seen bonus features.

Shared between the Blu-ray release (and a concurrent special edition DVD re-issue) will be the new retrospective documentary "Do You Alter?" and making-of featurette "Welcome to Gattaca,' both presented in full 1080 HD video on the Blu-ray.

Ported over from the previous standard-def DVD release are the original 1997 making-of featurette, the "Substance Test" outtake and four deleted scenes.

Updated tech specs include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, and in place of the previously-announced PCM audio, DolbyTrueHD 5.1 Surround tracks in English, French and Portuguese and a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track in Spanish. (Subtitle options are also offered in English, English SDH, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai.)

Finally, Sony has issued snazzy new cover art for 'Gattaca' to go along with the bevy of new features:

As previously announced, Sony has set a suggested $28.95 list price for the Blu-ray.

Looks like Rambo II and III are heading for Blu-Ray on 5/27, which leads to the speculation that the new Rambo film that's out now will hit the same day. This according to TVGuide

Has Fox said anything on releasing House on Blu-Ray?

House is produced by Universal, so if it was going to come to a high def format, it would be released on HD DVD... But considering the current situation, I would not expect it.

The earliest I would expect to see any episdoes on an HDM format would probably be early 2009.

House is Universal, I believe; it's just shown on Fox 45.

Looks like Ghostbusters, Starship Troopers, Men in Black, and Lawrence of Arabia are all in the works from Sony on Blu! Lawrence will probably hit in 2009, but the others are likely for this year according to this. Honestly, those three are titles I will MOST certainly buy. Given MIB is produced by Spielberg, I wonder if DTS-HD MA will be included on there. If not, these are three well-deserved catalog titles!

Lawrence fans should also be aware that its HD debut (1080i) will be next weekend on HDNet Movies. I saw promos at work (Radio Shack...I have no HDNet at home, but we have it there on Dish) and it looks stunning. I'm hoping Taxi Driver is coming up soon too from them.

They also say Godzilla (1998) is on its way, but...never mind. :D

Ah, dammit. :)

Oh well, I guess I'll have to catch up in SD before the next season starts.

I could see Ghostbusters getting tied into the new video game release later this year.

That's what I was thinking as well. Though next yr is the 25th anni... I think the game will be a pretty big one.

Dane Marvin 02-04-08 02:53 PM

Never had the desire to revisit Men in Black (once was enough for me), but those are 4 solid catalog titles. FOR ONCE! I really hope we get official announcements soon. The other 3 (Ghostbusters, Starship Troopers, Lawrence of Arabia) are immediate purchases for me.

Alvin & The Chipmunks 4/1/08 Blu-Ray

I can't believe this movie made over $200 mil in the US alone

Alvin gets digital copy on DVD, Blu-ray
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 2/5/2008

FEB. 5 | 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment continues to rally around disc-embedded digital copies with the April 1 standard DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Both Blu-ray and standard two-disc special edition versions of Alvin will contain a copy of the movie that can be moved to and watched on a wide variety of devices, including Apple iPods, Mac computers and PCs.

Last month, Fox secured the ability to use Apple's digital rights management technology on the digital copies embedded in DVDs, allowing the copies to be transferred to and played on iPods, the most popular portable video device. With that ability, Fox promised to aggressively offer such digital copies on its DVDs.

The studio added digital copies to Jan 15. title Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest and will include them on March 11 release Hitman.

Alvin and the Chipmunks, which generated more than $208 million theatrically, will mark one of Fox’s first titles in which the copy is also available on its Blu-ray version. Carrying a March 5 prebook date, Alvin will be priced at $29.98 for the standard single disc; $34.98 for the standard special edition; and $39.98 for the Blu-ray. On standard DVD, the digital copies are only included on the special edition, not the single disc.

Fox is supporting the release with a marketing blitz that is designed to make more than 3 billion consumer impressions. TV commercials are slated for such popular programming as American Idol, Dancing With the Stars and Hannah Montana. Kellogg's will feature the DVD on more than 50 million cereal boxes, and ICEE is backing collectible Alvin-themed squeeze bottles available at K-Mart and Sears.

Bonus features on both the special edition and Blu-ray versions include the two featurettes "Chip-Chip-Hurray!" and "Hitting the Harmony."

matome 02-05-08 12:08 PM

I'm surprised they're not waiting to release that during the Holiday season.

Good news for Blu-ray, but I won't be buying this. Maybe a Netflix rental since I loved the 80s cartoon. This movie will probably just make me long for the version I grew up with though.

Dane Marvin 02-05-08 01:11 PM

HD-DVD release of Charlie Wilson's War [Universal] will be day and date with the SD-DVD release in early spring (projected for 4/15). Announced as a combo disc. This is one I would love to have on Blu (saw it twice in theaters) if Universal would wake up! :)
