i don't understand the movie at all... i mean you have bunch of "artist" refusing to pay rent? what the hell, that's the story? i don't really like the music too (something something about smiles or the number 1000).

Good news. This has been available in Japan since last year, and I wondered when they would get around to releasing it here.
However, I believe that was a featureless MPEG-2 single-layer release, so let's hope they're re-encoding it (if that would improve it) and/or making it a BD-50 so the nice documentary can be included.

looks like all the extras on the standard DVD edition are getting ported over to the BluRay edition according to HighDef Digest:
Boasting the full supplemental package from the previous, highly-acclaimed two-disc DVD of 'Rent,' the Blu-ray will include the six-part documentary "No Day Like Today," an audio commentary with director Chris Columbus and cast, a collection of deleted scenes and excised musical performances, plus two public service announcements.
Tech specs include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and a collection of two uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks (each 48kHz/24-bit).

I'm sad this is a Blu-ray only release -- it's one of my favorite musicals (saw it 7 times on stage), and I enjoyed the movie nearly as much. Being in the HD DVD camp, however, I guess I'll live with the SD version.
