I can't say how surprised I am to now have an HD player. I love DVDs and movies but hated this format war. Now, thanks to Walmart and my own inner weakness, I am now involved in HD for better and for worse.

It was a thrill to get a player, but it was a bigger thrill to play that first disc, which for me was . . ."Hot Fuzz" that I got at BB. It looked great, better than I thought it would. I can't wait to watch my second and third purchases, "The Mummy Returns" (from Border's with the help of a 30% coupon and $5 in border bucks) and "Heroes" from FYE (and partially financed with a few old DVD trade-ins).

I must say the selection for HDs at FYE was lacking, while available titles at BB and Borders were pretty good.

So, what titles did other first-timers get to enjoy on their brand new toy?

I got my player three weeks ago (the A3) with 300 and Bourne Identity and had Children of Men beforehand (combo), I got the following within the first week of owning a player after that Circuit City sale:

Batman Begins
Goodfellas
Black Snake Moan
Transformers
V for Vendetta
Clerks II

On my short list for the next titles I want are:

First off, I'm the same, in the sense that I told myself I was NOT interested in either format until one of them was the clear winner - and maybe not even then. But $100 was too good to pass up.

My first title is Transformers...watched it last night, and it's utterly amazing. I'm in awe at how much better it makes the movie. I just bought Heroes S1 from someone on here, and I'm not sure what's next, because I don't really know what's available. This was literally a spur-of-the-moment thing.

PLEASE, please, please, please return that HD DVD of Full Metal Jacket *IF* it is the WHITE cover with the helmet. The PQ is downright shit, even in HD... if you love the movie, consider getting the latest release found here:

I rationalized the purchase of the player thinking I could sell the free discs and still have an upconverting player even if HD-DVD loses. I bought Seabiscuit because I really like the movie and the DVD Talk reviewer gave it five stars for video.
All I can say is: Is that it??
Honestly, I was expecting much better.
There is a huge difference between my analog cable and OTA HD that is very obvious to me but the difference between HD-DVD Seabiscuit and the normal DVD Seabiscuit is to my eye, very slight.
So, I doubt I'll buy more HD software. In my view, the small improvement just doesn't justify the much higher price.

What kind of TV do you have? How far away do you sit?

HD Ready, component only 65" Mits about 6 years old.
I was sitting about 12' away but normal viewing distance would be a couple more feet. At the time, the TV was pulled away from the wall to connect the player.

I bought the player along with Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut and Full Metal Jacket (Remastered). Since then I have also gotten "The Shining" and "Batmans Begins."

How's this for obsessive compulsive? anal-retentive or whatever?

I wanted to get 2001, but I decided the blue in the cover would look better with the Blu-Ray case, so I bought The Shining, because the cover was black and "Stanley Kubrick's" was in red, better matched the HD-DVD case.

I had that in my hands yesterday and then went with Heroes figuring it'll give more HD viewing time.

I really wanted to pick that one in the rebate but sadly noticed it was the white cover. There's always Christmas from the Mrs. for that one.

That's too bad. I really had the opposite reaction. I thought I'd be left unimpressed, especially with a comedy, Hot Fuzz, that I thought looked lackluster in the theater. I couldn't get over all the detail and textures that popped out. (Plus, there wasn't the customary short pause in the middle of the film caused by a DVD layer change!)

I was waiting on buying either format until the price was right. This weekend was definitely right for me!
On Friday, I bought the Walmart A2 deal with 5 free movies for $100. On top of that I bought an A3 from Best Buy for $199 with 10 free movies! So, for $300 I now have 2 HD DVD players and 15 free movies. Here's what I got:

Here are the FREE movies I got in store:
1)Batman Begins
2)Superman Returns

3)Transformers
These were included in the A3 box:
4)300
5)Bourne Identity

Here are the Mail-in titles I picked:
6)The Italian Job
7)Babel
8)Pitch Black
9)The Thing
10)Full Metal Jacket
11)Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
12)The Frighteners
13)Firewall
14)Darkman
15)Troy

I also bought THE LAST SAMURAI today for $17.99 from Best Buy, so that is my first official movie purchase!

Just so you know, The Last Samurai is $13.99 online at CC (and generally accepted in-store as well), together with a few other titles.

I got in on the Best Buy 10 free HD-DVD deal with the A3. I wish I had known that pre-orders would work, but I'm still satisfied with my picks.

300
The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Supremacy
Batman Begins
Transformers

I haven't decided what 5 I'm going with on the Mail-In yet.

Jumped on board with the A-3 at Best Buy.

My three free were:

Batman Begins
Superman Returns
Terminator 3

not sure about the 5 freebies yet other than Troy being one of them.

I think Ill be buying my HD movies there from now on! As for the 5 freebies, I think Ill be getting The Italian Job, The Thing, TMNT, The Frighteners, and Black Rain.

Where do you see TMNT as an option for a freebie?

That's odd, that form has Syriana instead of Troy as well. Hmm...

Wow.. thanks for posting that. The form I have shows Swordfish in the slot where TMNT is and TROY instead of Syriana. I'll definitely be picking up TMNT instead!!

Are there more than 2 variations of this form??
