Well I heard that Sony is working on a new SKU PS3 that will clean your bathroom and walk your dog for a MSRP of $49.99.

I feel pretty confident that this was a good move for Paramount. Worst case scenario, HD DVD keels over, the only Blu-ray sales they lost out on were when the market was negligible in size anyway, whatever incentives they received should've cushioned most of the blow (and for all we know could keep them in the black), and then they release on Blu-ray when there's one format and authoring/replication/etc. have greatly matured. Best case scenario, their support coupled with Toshiba's aggressive pricing tactics push HD DVD into the mainstream, and that could pay dividends for everyone. Paramount wins -- or at least doesn't lose -- either way. It's a drag for people exclusively supporting Blu-ray, I know, but that's business. A $399 PS3 in time for the holidays sounds pretty realistic to me. |

Interactive features will be a moot point once the PS3 gets the 2.0 firmware update and Profile 2.0 players slowly but surely get to the market.
P.S Sony is coming out with a 399 PS3 for the holidays based on a new sku in the works so I would not discount the PS3. Article for confirmation: http://www.thesimexchange.com/commun...d=12568&r=2624 And from what I've read on AVS, Java is a pain in the ass to program using the interactive features. Paramount said similar things. HDi is much easier to deal with, so that would be another benefit to Warners. Plus, they do the encode on HD DVD first and then port over to BD. I wouldn't be shocked if they backed HD DVD exclusively next year, much like they were planning to in the first place. |

This whole exclusivity debate is very similar to what has happened with video games between the 360 and PS3. Make the game for the 360 then port over to PS3 six months later.

I on the other hand will just wait to see how the Holiday season turns out. I do agree however that the pricing advantage goes to the red-team. Pro-B |

Pro-B Your first sentence is in correct as I haven't stated that they will be HD DVD only early next year. I have simply said I wouldn't be surprised by such a move and have given reasons why I think that. Q4 is important, but not just software sales. I would think Warners will look at how much hardware is sold. I think everyone is curious to see how much a factor those $199 Venturer HD DVD players will be. |
Warner needs to fulfill their damn HD orders over the last few months before they do anything.

Warner Says Blu-ray Comments "Misquoted and Misconstrued"
LINK
Speaking with High-Def Digest, Jim Noonan, SVP of Strategic Promotion and Communication for Warner Home Entertainment Group said "I can tell you that Warner's position has not changed, and I know that Dan did not intend to suggest that wasn't the case. We support both formats and we have made no decision to alter that policy, nor are there any such announcements coming, or being planned." As for speculation that the studio is waiting for Q4 sales results before making an announcement of format exclusivity -- perhaps even as soon as this January's CES in Las Vegas -- Noonan shot down any such short-term scenarios. "Like any major company, we are always reviewing our strategies in every aspect of our business, it is what smart companies do. I can't say what may happen five, ten years down the line. But right now, Warner Bros. has made no decision to change course. We are still onboard with both formats, and will continue [with a strong line-up of new releases and catalog titles], just as we have in the past in supporting HD DVD and Blu-ray." |
There is NOTHING definitive at all about that quote. This does not dispel the rumor that WB is considering focusing support on one format or another. This is PR doublespeak.

It would make me a lot happier if Disney went dual-format rather than Warner going HD DVD exclusive. It would be healthier for HD as a whole.

Well I have a good friend that does HD-DVD/Blu-Ray authoring work for GDMX, the post house owned by Time Warner that does all of WB's HD work, and he says that there haven't been any whispers of WB going exclusive for either format and that work is just starting for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray versions of 'I Am Legend' already...and I'm guessing the release date for that title will be around May? And unlike Paramount, where money was a motivating factor on pulling the plug on Blu-Ray titles already finished or mid-work, I don't see WB pulling the plug on titles mid-build. If and when they decide to pick a format, I bet it will be considerably more diplomatic...
