Toshiba Delivers Its Third Generation HD DVD Players Taking the High Def Movie Experience to a Broader Consumer Base
Wednesday September 5, 7:00 pm ET
Unrivaled Features, Affordable Prices, and Exciting New Promotions Add Up to Unprecedented Benefits For HDTV Consumers This Fall

CEDIA, DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") revealed its third generation HD DVD players at the CEDIA show today rolling out its most advanced, affordable line of HD DVD players with outstanding functionalities and Web-enabled network capabilities of the HD DVD format. Gearing up for the new line to hit shelves this fall, Toshiba also announced new HD DVD marketing initiatives and consumer promotions, including a season-long promotional campaign with NBC Television Station Group for Sunday Night Football broadcasts, a free two movie bundle with third generation players and a new five free HD DVD movie promotion.
"We have raised the bar yet again with the unmatched interactive capabilities and state-of-the art video and audio performance of our third generation players," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "Web-enabled network capabilities, available on HD DVD, illustrate how Toshiba is delivering on its commitment to provide consumers with the ultimate home entertainment experience in high definition. With this new line, a growing base of HDTV consumers can now look forward to an unrivaled home theater experience this fall."

Toshiba Third Generation HD DVD Players

Toshiba's third generation family starts with the entry level HD-A3 player featuring 1080i output capability. The other two new models, Toshiba's HD-A30 and HD-A35, will output 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080p), the highest HD signal currently available. Both models are capable of outputting signals at 1080p/24 frames per second so consumers can enjoy movies in their native frame rate. The HD-A30 and HD-A35 models also feature "CE-Link" (HDMI(TM)-CEC), allowing two-way control between the HD DVD player and a TV through an HDMI connection.

With a new slim design, Toshiba's third generation players have a cabinet that is approximately 1/4-inch slimmer than second generation models. All of Toshiba's HD DVD models are backward compatible allowing users to enjoy their libraries of current DVDs and CDs while improving the picture quality of regular DVDs by upconverting them through an HDMI connection to near high definition quality.

New HD DVD Promotions

To further drive HD DVD sales this fall, Toshiba also announced today a number of exciting new marketing initiatives and promotions. To communicate the benefits of HD DVD to millions of HDTV owners, Toshiba announced a season- long promotional campaign with the NBC Television Station Group and its broadcasts of Sunday Night Football with Bob Costas and Tiki Barber. This includes 30 second HD DVD ads, web sponsorships promoting the format, as well as special on-air vignettes that will build awareness and educate consumers about HD DVD throughout the holidays and into 2008.

In addition, in order to allow consumers to enjoy the HD DVD experience right out of the box, Toshiba is offering consumers free movies with the purchase of their third generation players. With Toshiba's new bundle promotion, consumers will take home the highly acclaimed HD DVDs "300" from Warner Home Video and "The Bourne Identity" from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

"Warner is excited to offer consumers who purchase the new Toshiba HD DVD players the opportunity to own '300'," said Dorinda Marticorena, SVP Worldwide High Definition Media, Warner Home Video. "Not only is it the best selling HD DVD title to date, but it is also one of the most advanced titles with regard to new and innovative Hi Def features, both on the disc itself and through web connectivity. We believe that with the initial sales of "300", and this promotion, more than a half million consumers will own "300" on HD DVD by the end of this year."

"Now is an exciting time to buy an HD DVD player, with a blockbuster title like 'The Bourne Identity' in the box at retail," said Craig Kornblau, President, Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "Toshiba is leading the way in bringing high definition home, and at prices that will fit in any home theater. By offering The Bourne Identity, in addition to Toshiba's 'Five Free' offer, we're giving consumers an amazing deal."

In addition to its bundle promotion, Toshiba announced "The Perfect HD Offer," which will begin on October 1st 2007 and continue until February 28th 2008. As a result, with the purchase of any Toshiba HD DVD player, consumers will be able to select five HD DVD titles for free, from a selection of 15, via a mail-in offer. Full offer details will be available at http://www.toshibahddvd.com.

Sony Bolsters Blu-Ray Disc Player Line With Two New Models
Adding ES and Step-up Models with Advanced Audio Codec Support
By PR Newswire
DENVER, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- (Booth #600) -- Sony introduced two additional Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) players today offering a full range of features.

Optimized for the home theater enthusiast, the new BDP-S2000ES model is the first Blu-ray Disc player in Sony's "Elevated Standard" (ES) line. This model, as well as the new BDP-S500, which complements Sony's current BDP-S300 BD player, features full high-definition 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output. They support 7.1 channel linear PCM and Dolby(R) TrueHD, Dolby(R) Digital Plus, as well as dts-HD(TM) High Resolution Audio bitstream output via HDMI(TM) (ver1.3).

"Consumer support of Sony's Blu-ray Disc products has been outstanding and the new models are targeted to satisfy the demand of those who crave an even greater level of entertainment and performance," said Chris Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics' Home Product Division. "From the enthusiast level of our ES line down to the entry-level models, our commitment to the finest quality video and sound delivered by the BD format has never been stronger."

The BDP-S2000ES model features dual shield construction, which prevents dust from collecting on the BD drive, and a rigid drive bracket to minimize vibration. The player also sports a rigid beam chassis that reduces internal vibration, improving playback.

Similar to other Sony ES products, the unit's aluminum insulator feet help isolate the player from external vibrations, while separate audio and video boards deliver better sound and picture quality. The unit also includes the IR-in feature for custom installation market.

The BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 units both offer 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio bitstream output, which is optional specification of HDMI ver1.3. This makes them a perfect match for the recently announced STR-DA5300ES and STR-DA4300ES AV receivers, which also feature the ability to decode the advanced audio codecs. The new BD players also feature Dolby TrueHD, along with the Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio decoding function via HDMI, to offer a better sound experience with existing receivers.

The Blu-ray Disc players feature 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output. They are compatible with most standard DVDs and feature 1080p upscaling through HDMI to capable HDTV sets, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.

The new players support AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color(TM) (xvYCC) technology, an international standard for wide color space. The standard expands the current data range of video by about 1.8 times, allowing the players to output more natural and vivid colors similar to what the human eye can actually see. The players also feature compatibility with an array of video formats, including BD-R/RE (BDMV mode), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW (Video Mode), CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format), MP3, and JPEG on DVD recordable media.

Both the BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players incorporate BRAVIA(R) Theatre Sync(TM) through HDMI. This allows for integrated operation with a compatible BRAVIA flat-panel LCD HDTV sets and audio/video receivers. With the touch of a button, you can easily power on and synch the inputs of compatible Sony AV devices connected to the players via HDMI for hassle-free enjoyment of high-definition Blu-ray Discs.

The units offer optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, along with 5.1 channel decoding capability for backward compatibility with existing A/V receivers.

The new BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players will be available this fall for about $1,300 and $700, respectively. They will be offered at Sony Style stores, online at sonystyle.com, at military base exchanges, and at authorized retailers nationwide.

That remote sounds so cool...I have to say it's an ingenious way to get Trekkies to buy HD DVD players.

Eh. They're being marketed as high-end players, so it follows that they're being priced as high-end players too.

Toshiba has been doing this since the start so its expected to see a $300 player and then a $600/$700. This is a new one for Sony. I was hoping for a $399.99 or so BR player...something to replace the PS3 with.

I saw somewhere...Gizmodo maybe, that they were going to do a Sony BR player as well as an receiver and speakers...any more info on that? Theater in a box I believe.

Microsoft Shatters the PC-to-Television Barrier, Releases First Details on Extenders for Windows Media Center

Sep 6, 2007 12:01 AM (26 mins ago)

DENVER, Sept. 6 - Watching a live TV broadcast in the living room, pausing it, and then effortlessly resuming it at the same moment from the bedroom or kitchen will soon become even easier, as Microsoft Corp. provides a first look at the new Extenders for Windows(R) Media Center platform, which will power a variety of devices to be released this holiday season. A wave of new cool, quiet, home-theater-quality devices from companies such as Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems Inc.; D-Link Corporation; and Niveus Media Inc. may incorporate new features, including live high-definition (HD) video, wireless networking and expanded support for audio and video formats such as DivX and Xvid.

The new Extender devices, which will be unveiled later this month in a variety of innovative form factors and price points, unleash the pictures, music, video content and live TV from a PC running Windows Vista(R) Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate for viewing and listening on a big-screen TV display for the ultimate entertainment solution.

"With more than 60 million Windows Vista Media Center PCs in use worldwide, there are many customers eager to bring the simple and elegant Media Center experience to the televisions in their homes," said

Dave Alles, general manager for eHome at Microsoft. "The new Extenders for Windows Media Center make it easy to get a wide range of personal and Internet content not only on someone's main TV but on all the TVs in the house. Whether it's a high-def show recorded from digital cable, new Internet video, or your personal library of pictures, music and videos, it's all on your television -- just a remote-click away."

New extenders will be available in a wide range of form factors, including both stand-alone set-top boxes and integration with other devices such as DVD players and televisions, so now connecting to a PC running Windows Media Center is even more convenient and seamless than ever. New support for Wireless N high-speed technology means there is no need to run Ethernet cables throughout the home to watch HD video in up to six rooms at once.

Extenders for Windows Media Center are also, for the first time, enhanced to allow support for popular video codecs such as DivX and Xvid, along with continued support for Windows Media(R) Video HD files. These extenders will also lead the industry in supporting the ability to send protected HD content to additional rooms, including recorded TV from over-the-air Advanced Television Systems Committee or Cable Card tuners and movies and music available from providers such as CinemaNow, MovieLink LLC and Napster LLC. Extenders also support Media Center features such as Reuters news feeds, National Public Radio broadcasts, up-to-date sports reports from the FOX Sports Lounge, and subscription music from XM Radio. At the same time, these devices support Parental Controls built into Windows Media Center, allowing parents to choose the content their children are allowed to view.

Consumers have already logged millions of hours of use on Xbox 360s as Extenders for Windows Media Center. Microsoft is working first with Cisco/Linksys, D-Link and Niveus Media to deliver quiet, high-quality products, and the company will be expanding the Extenders' platform to other companies in the future. The new Extenders for Windows Media Center are being demonstrated at the Microsoft booth at the CEDIA EXPO 2007 in Denver Thursday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 9.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

I was planning on upgrading to a Gen 3 unit anyway, so the Star Trek remote is definitely a bonus (and compared to the Gen 1 remote, it will probably more functional). It sounds like they are continuing their 5 free discs along with 2 free in box, although it's too bad I recently purchased 300 and Bourne Identity though.

Which means that the BR 5 free offer will likely be extended as well. That's good for people like me waiting on a possible price break during the holiday months.

What's funny is the BR offer has more of the movies I would like to have than the HD offer but the way they break up the discs into tiers makes it less attractive to me personally. Maybe that will change.

Hopefully the G3 remotes don't scratch as bad as G2 remotes. My remote is already pretty nicked up.

It's what I paid for my A1. I agree that $500 for a video player a year after your format launched is a bit steep.

Has anyone seen a report that the HD-A3 will be less than $299? I can't tell if they're saying that's the 'retail' price or not. Getting Bourne 1 and 300 is nice, but I'd still like the player to be

Value Electronics is already accepting preorders at $249 for the A3, so I think it's safe to say that upon release that price will be commonplace.

They have the HD-A2 for $295.99, I don't see the HD-A3 on their site anywhere. I'd love to see confirmation of that price. I'm not doubting you, I'd just love to see it.

Any chance they'll be shipping the HD-A3 early?

Since the current offer is on the HD-A2 and must be purchased by 9/30/07, I think most of us are assuming that the new offer for the HD-A3 will begin 10/1, and have a purchase window of 10/1/07 - xx/xx/08.

But if we preorder it today from Value Electronics, there's no rebate offer yet on the HD-A3. I'm wondering why they're advertising a 5-free offer without a link to the rebate form supporting it.
Get 7 free HD DVD discs. Every player comes packed with Born Identity and 300 HD DVDs and get 5 more titles by mail in rebate.
I'm not saying they're making it up (even though Bourne is Born ), but it's possible that if we purchase an HD-A3 before the qualifying purchase window begins, the rebate house can easily deny it because the terms weren't met. (I did call VE, but they know nothing about the new rebate form even though they're using it as a selling point on their site.)

Obviously the solution is to wait until the rebate form is available and make sure the purchase date terms are met, but that means a longer wait for the player.
