Thank you very much, Pro-B! I appreciate your reply and have been reading your posts for years: you have helped me to build my video library, to make the right choices when buying foreign titles.
I just watched the Criterion disc of THE CRANES ARE FLYING...now if only a Blu-ray were planned somewhere in the world...The cinematography was outstanding! I've never seen so many chaotic and exciting tracking-shots in one film. This film needs to be experienced in its proper resolution

I believe that there will be a different Soviet film that will make its debut on Blu-ray through Criterion before Kalatozov's film arrives. Elsewhere Soviet cinema isn't planned for BR treatment at the moment.

It looks like Eureka will be bringing Tokyo Sonata to the Masters of Cinema series on Blu-ray!

It's also been confirmed on the Criterion Forums that the special features and everything will indeed work on a US PS3.

Here's the DVDBeaver review:

This has me even more excited about Tokyo Sonata now. I just may buy all of the MoC Blu-rays if they will all totally work here.

Tremendously excited about Tokyo Sonata. I'll just pretend it's MoC's inaugural Blu-ray since Mad Detective is such an awful movie...

Must still be a ways off, though, as none of the sites they list for preordering actually have it listed yet. Had hoped to get this one before the end of the year.

I got the Mad Detective MoC in the mail the other day and I can totally confirm that the film, special features, and everything works fine on my US PS3.

The UK theatrical (also through Eureka) is on 30/01/09 so the earliest it will hit DVD/BR would be April sometime.

As an aside, the UK editions of Kill Bill are region free...

No, they are the standard cuts with the black and white sequences in them - I'm guessing they are the same disc as the US one...

On another note, the Tokyo Sonata blu-ray comes out 4th May with an RRP of £22.99

Does anyone have any idea if/when/how Koch Lorber intends to enter the Blu-ray market? I'm particularly interested in their Lina Wertmuller and Juzo Itami stuff, but their Website is no help.

I'm kind of figuring it'll be a good 5 years before I see any of this stuff arrive in HD, so I'm not holding my breath.

Giles - not sure what price you were expecting it to be, as most UK DVDs have an RRP of £19.99, if not more for SEs etc, so £3 more for the Blu-ray seems pretty reasonable. I'd be surprised if this hit Blu-ray outside of Japan and the UK, but who knows - Regent have the theatrical but I'm not sure whether they release the home ent as well.

at the current terrible currency price, 23 GBP is roughly 46 bucks... ummm, I think I can wait... considering if and when the North American video becomes a reality, most MSRP for discs are 39.99.

has Regent released anything theatrically here in the states?

Regent are only a US theatrical company I think - Eureka (who are doing the UK DVD and Blu Ray releases) are the UK distributor.

The exchange rate has plummeted recently, so £23 is now only about $35 according to xe.net. Also bear in the mind that £23 is the recommended retail price - I would expect Amazon et al to be giving a 30-40% discount on that price. Your call of course as it is your money, I just have a feeling that this will not be on anyone's priority list to release in HD in the US.

That price is TBC, but then so is the price on the standard DVD - it is possible they may change their minds. You do get a booklet with this one though - on disc extras are TBC.

If not for the rumors of a 45th anniversary release on these shores, I'd already have had my credit card out for this one. Apparently the same sites have For a Few Dollars more as well.

Artificial Eye looks to be releasing this in the U.K. They typically author region-free discs, correct? (as indicated above)
