If you're an audiophile, you aren't getting the most out of Blu-ray discs with the optical audio output, but for most people, it'll be good enough.

Surprised it took this long for someone to post this.

This is the ONLY drawback to the PS3. Other than that, its a great player.

huh? no component cables either?
The PS3 is a high-def device and it doesn't come with any cables to allow you to use high-def out of the box?
what was sony thinking?

hey, i got the same receiver too!
Think i've had it for over 10+ years now.
lossless audio wouldn't be a hugh deal for me though.

Sony was thinking they were losing enough money as it were on the PS3, shifting the cost of a HDMI cable (that might not be used by the buyer - if they didn't have a HDMI-capable TV set) isn't that hard a decision for Sony.

do you need to buy any special cable for the PS3 HDMI or component outputs?
(The PS2 required a special cable for components)
or can you use any standard HDMI or component cable?
I have a HDMI->DVI cable already since my plasma only has DVI inputs. would I be able to use that?

Any HDMI cable will do. You can use the PS2's componant cable.

PS3...then goto Monoprice.com. Cheap HDMI cables.
Also check out your local GameStop/EB as I have seen numerous Blu-Ray remotes for $20 used.

any negatives for the PS3 as a player? I've been waiting for prices to come down for stand alones as I have little interest in using PS3 for games...

The PS3 wouldn't work with my universal remote, that's the only problem I had. I was, however, able to pick up the PS3 remote at Best Buy for $16. It was one of those open box specials and it works perfectly!

As an avid Sony hater, the PS3 was my first PlayStation, and let me tell you this...someone would have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. Fantastic machine!
