I try to keep a healthy balance. I realized the other day that I have every HD DVD of films released before 1980, although there are so few that that's not exactly much of an accomplishment.

Edit -- as for those specific titles, I have 9 of them. Only missing Curse of the Black Pearl, which I'm either buying really soon or holding off for the inevitable boxed set later in the year.

I've bought classics & I've bought blockbusters... I don't analyze it too much, I just buy what I want.

I've bought as many classics as possible, but also blockbusters. I have room for both. I'm still more likely to buy a classic when I have to choose. Few classics to choose from in HD though.

Are you really calling those last five classics, or is this just a list of what you've bought?

I've bought some of both newer movies and classics.

Oops, I intended to set up a proper poll and didn't have time to finish it (but you have to "submit" to see the poll setup page and I didn't realize that the thread had been posted). My intention was to try to pick five older catalog releases plus five newer "blockbuster" type HDs spread over HD DVD and BD.

If you have any suggestions about which titles to include, I'd like to hear them. There is a limit of ten selections for a poll so I was going to choose five older titles (the first five) and five newer releases (the ones I was mulling over were the last five). And I was trying to split the titles over HD DVD and BD. So, Matrix and Batman are HD DVD exclusive, at present, and Casino Royale and Pirates are BD exclusive. Superman Returns is out on both formats I believe.

[I was trying to stay away from things like King Kong and The Fifth Element because they were pack-ins with the game machines, IIRC.]

I buy movies I'm interested in, regardless of their age. Older films can and often do look amazing on these formats.

I have a mix of both. Midnight Run, and Trading Places are 2 of my favorite comedies of all time, so I just had to upgrade. Most of my others are modern day hits, but I do have The Sting on order.

I own all five, but it is because I am interested in them. (Where is Mutiny on the Bounty? Bullitt?) All five of those films look amazing! I still can't believe the clean-up job on Forbidden Planet...

Off the top of my head, that I wouldn't consider "new" or "blockbuster" releases

Only 3 of my titles are from before 1990. (Out of ~30).

Exactly 10 of my 2400 DVD's are from before 1970 and those all have either Connery or Eastwood in them. My Blu-ray purchases will probably travel down the same path.

Lot of classics. I've been way more impressed with classic movies in HD than with newer films.

I love the classic films. It's like watching movies you grew up with all over for the first time. Big thank you to WB for not forgetting the past films, pre80s, that are still loved.

I forgot about Mutiny on the Bounty, good suggestion. I am trying to limit the list to five so that I can compare it to five "blockbuster" type releases. For the older catalog titles part of the list I think that I will go with:
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Casablanca (1943)
The Searchers (1956)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

Since I didn't get any suggestions for the newer titles, I'll stick with with the ones I have above.

Be warned. Mutiny on the Bounty has a horrible audio sync issue that pops up half way into the movie. I'm planning on dumping that one if Warner ever puts out a fixed version. I was hoping they would offer replacement discs.

The other four you have listed are must own discs for anyone that loves movies.

^ Really? Is that a general problem? I hadn't heard of that, although I haven't looked at the reviews either.

Some of us might not have noticed when it was first released because the HD-A1 under its earlier firmware versions had so many problems staying in sync anyway.

I just bought my first HD DVD title: Bullitt.

I already own most of the "classics" on DVD and am fighting the urge to replace them.

So far though I've double (or triple) dipped on Enter the Dragon and, while maybe not technically a classic, Unforgiven.
