The effects are nice, as much as I can see of them coming over standard TV, but they aren't $650 nice. And I'm a diehard Trekkie who bought those original two-a-discs someone mentioned (then sold them and bought the season sets) - although I never paid anything close to $40 for them.
HD isn't a sea change from SD like SD was from VHS. I think the vendors are going to be shocked at who won't be paying these ridiculous prices. Then they'll remainder them out. Inside of a year, I predict they'll be on eBay for under $100, unless Paramount lets the originals go out of print so as not to compete with itself.

Will Netflix rent these on HD?
I'm going to be purchasing an HD DVD player soon and was curious if Netflix will be renting ST: TOS. I currently use Blockbuster, but they aren't supporters of HD online and I'm thinking of switching back to Netflix. If anyone can confirm Netflix carrying these, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Rick

^Thus far Netflix has carried every HD DVD and BD released in the US. Including box sets.
So, yes, it is highly likely that Netflix will have ST: TOS.

I really want to see these new Star Trek discs. Our local affiliate wasn't showing them for the longest time. I've managed to catch a couple, but want to check them all out in HD.

Please tell me this is a mistake. Amazon currently shows this as a combo disc? Do they honestly believe that there is someone who is interested in the set at this price who did not have it on DVD?

I think that's reasonable, as this has all newly redone special effects and new extras.
The hardcore trekkies would want this, and as they are not releasing (to my knowledge) this remastered set in standard DVD, combo format makes the most sense for the studio.

For some reason I remembered reading that the HD DVD side had the remastered episodes, and the SD side had the unaltered episodes. But maybe I was dreaming about that one.

It's not like Star Trek TOS ever had good special effects that the creators were happy with at the time. The show was made extremely cheaply and slap-dash, with every possible corner cut.
And the original DVDs are still available for those who want them.

So, are they changing the aspect ratio to 16:9 only for these? I can see that is our new big OAR fight.
I don't mind if they want to redo effects as long as they release the originals as well. A package of 4:3/original effects and 16:9/new effects would be fine.

exactly. Japan IS getting the 16x9 versions, (live action tilt and scanned) for broadcast though.
Knowing Paramount, (cbs) in a couple of years, there will indeed be WS versions for the folks who have to have their displays filled.

I really want these, but it sure feels like I am probably paying an extra $40 to have these as combos. Man, I hate combos. I cannot imagine why they would do this. If this was HD only, I would imagine many TOS fans actually upgrading to HD players to get this. The players are nearly as cheap as this set!!!
Bah, this is horse shit. If they want this format to be anything more than a minor blip in between DVD and the next big thing, they need to commit.
