The Remastered version of The Original Series on HD DVD will be previewed at this year's Comic-Con. The set is due by November/December.

Why is it exclusive to HD-DVD? Are there IME features on the episodes?

And is this being released as one giant complete series boxset? That'll be massive.

Any bets on price? I'll guess $200 per season.

With Paramount's history, I'm sure the show will be parceled out into a series of single discs with two episodes apiece at a $39.99 price point. It's fairly certain that they won't be releasing complete season sets this year, being that the studio is still in the process of reworking all of the episodes, and aren't doing them in chronological order.

What I'd like to know is whether the original versions of the episodes are also being remastered.

CBS is going with HD-DVD first because they're going with Combo discs, though they will come out on Blu-Ray as well at a later date.

Fresh details have surfaced for the highly-anticipated high-def disc release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series,' with the set now expected to include never-before-seen footage exclusive to the next-gen edition.

It was nearly a year ago that Paramount Home Entertainment first revealed plans to release 'Star Trek' on HD DVD, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the sci-fi classic. At the time, the studio said the new release would feature a host of new GGI enhancements, among them redone spaceship exteriors, a rejiggered opening and even a digitally remastered version of William Shatner's classic 38-word "Space, the final frontier..." credit monologue.

Now comes news that the high-def release will also include never-before-seen behind-the-scenes 8mm footage taken during the original production of the series.

Though Paramount has yet to announce an official street date for 'The Original Series,' the just-published program guide for this year's Comic-Con reveals that the studio is planning to give convention attendees a first peek at footage from the long-awaited release on July 26 at a special event dubbed "Star Trek: The Original Series - As You've Never Seen It," which is also slated to include a panel of 'Trek' luminaries.

Strangely, Paramount has made no mention of a Blu-ray release of the series (only HD DVD), although since the studio supports both next-gen formats, we can only assume that the set will ultimately find its way to Blu-ray, as well. More details are expected to be revealed at ComiCon. Watch this space!

I don't know that it's a good idea to buy these. I think I have heard that the remasters are sort of a work in progress with a learning curve. The guys doing the new effects have said they may go back and fix or add things to earlier episodes.

If so, that would make them Paramount's first Combo releases.

I'm all over these, but hopefully they won't be ungodly expensive.

Where are the movies?

No. The reason they chose an HD DVD/DVD combo format is to get those people who don't yet have a HD player to pay the expected high price for these now, rather than wait for the price to come down to something more reasonable a year or three later when they do have a HD player.

When David Rossi, who's heading up this whole thing, spoke at the Star Trek convention in Chicago last year, the impression I got was that they started remastering the eps as-is, then realized just how bad all the multi-pass effects and matte shots looked, so then they started with the idea of the CGI effects. So I'm pretty sure there are originals in their vault just waiting for the right time to release.

Come on, do you really think Paramount would pass up an opportunity to sell what is essentially the same product twice? I'm sure it will be after all the added FX versions are released though.

I'm gonna guess MSRP of $199 per season.

Will they be missing bits and pieces of dialogue and scenes like two of the remastered versions I've seen?

At least two episodes (Amok Time and All Our Yesterdays) had missing dialogue when I saw them on my local channel. In Amok Time, critical interaction between Spock and Ta'Pau was carelessly cut.

I presume this was the result of the local station making cuts for more commercials, but one never knows.

The whole episodes are being remastered, any cuts are done locally for time. I believe if you download from iTunes, it's the whole thing.

I find it interesting that with almost every single release (except Blood Diamond and Good Night and Good Luck) the HD DVD version precedes the BD.

But that's also Warner. This is Paramount. They're doing this for the ability to make them combos. Warner usually put out on HD first due to iHD.

The local station doesn't make the cuts, AFAIK, CBSDigital offered the stations either the full uncut ep or a shortened version. Guess which verison every channel chose to accept and air...?

Combos... what a bunch of crap. Isn't it safe to say that most people who want TOS have it by now on SD, and that HD owners simply want HD? Is there any point to the combo discs other than to charge more?

If the price is not ungodly, I would still be interested in these despite them being combos. I thought the remasters would be sacrilege, but after watching a few, I was surprised at how well done and unobtrusive they were... at least to my eye.

Sure, for the hardcore Trekkies with DVD only who want the new FX.

Personally, I'd say buy an HDDVD player.
