Amazon to offer independent films in HD format online
Amazon.com Inc. will begin selling high-definition independent films in the HD-DVD format through its on-demand DVD printing service, the company said late Sunday.
The web retailer said it will waive processing fees for the first 1,000 films it accepts for production by its CustomFlix Labs Inc. subsidiary.

The only title that's named is The Sundance Channel's Big Ideas for a Small Planet.

By the way, Customflix said in March that they expect to support Blu-ray at some point this year, so BD won't be shut out. The article I posted upthread made it sound as if Microsoft is lending some hefty support to the HD DVD discs, though, and I'd imagine that would probably not carry over to any Blu-ray releases.
I get the impression that they mean "independent" in the truest possible sense.

CustomFlix's Home Page also says that the company now will waive processing fees for the first 10,000 projects it accepts for publication, although that includes books, music, and films. Also, it's hard to say how many of the films submitted will be made available in HD, as it's up to the indie filmmaker to submit it in HD.

This sounds like a very exciting development for the independent filmmaking scene, but it's doubtful that it will have much affect on the format war. I can't imagine that many of these obscure low-budget titles will sell in huge volumes. A lot of these movies likely also have sketchy photography and production values, so the "Tier System" freaks on AVS will inevitably whine about them (and find some way to blame everything on VC-1).

The CustomFlix website was updated today with details on the "1000 HD Indies" project:

I guess the "10,000 titles" the site mentioned yesterday was just for standard DVD, books, or music.
They also posted the original press release announcing the project:
