A continued source for raw standalone units sold post-giveaways and Toshiba discount will make it easier to recognize any new trends. This is the kind of data needed to show if the price drops have helped.

I don't tend to look at SA sales as a zero-sum game. One side's numbers going up doesn't necessarily explain why the other side's numbers are going down.

That's the one! Sorry Gizmo...

I don't visit there that often, but I remember seeing some guy that linked an HD DVD website a while back. I don't know why I thought it was Kosty. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone.

AVS has gone downhill lately. The censorship rules suck. Mods lock threads left and right and some just mysteriously vanish. They closed the insider's thread also.

Lately? That place has been Thunderdome for the past year or so. I rarely go there anymore.

If mods are starting to take action maybe it will be a civil place one day.

Why was the Insider thread closed? No explanation was even given. Rumors can't posted anymore and the CC Clearance thread was locked very fast because they found out it was not a clearance and didn't want anymore fighting. Its just a horrid site. Its just fun to argue with people who would be "embarrased" to own an HD DVD player, yet they own a PS3 with 4 Blu-ray movies, Talladega Nights and Spider-Man 3 being 2 of the 4 movies. Its odd.

The admin said it had "server its purpose" or outlived its usefulness or something like that. I was quite surprised.

I think the media would tell everyone it's not worth the hassle anymore and just avoid HD altogether.

If any BD studios went red, and put the market back to 50-50 again, then HDM can kiss mass adoption good-bye, imo.
I agree. And honestly, even if two of the current BD exclusive studios went neutral, it still wouldn't help HD. Toshiba would have to convince a studio that's currently Blu-ray exclusive to go HD DVD exclusive, and I just don't think that's going to happen.

Meaning the Insiders went back to Blu-ray.com where the questions were easy and lined with "HD DUD". They didn't want to have real discussions.

What if Toshiba got Disney. What would Warner do? Stay Blu-ray, go neutral, go HD DVD? I'm sure they signed an out-clause just like Paramount rumored to do as well.

I don't know, it seemed like Amir was the only one regularly holding court there.

Personally I'm glad his smug *** is mostly gone. Regardless of format, the guy's posts just got on my nerves.

Amir was at least honest and posted the facts. The BR guys tend to put thigs in haiku's, riddles etc. They could say "Elmo was eating a cookie with Big Bird" and people would read 100 things into it...and they did

Pipe dreams. Why the incessant urge for this HDM murdering war to continue?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I want a quick end to the war. I bought into HD, still think it is the better choice, but just want it to be over.

HD is only going to stay a niche market anyway, but the only chance it has to break 5% of so market share is if we get down to just one format, imo.

Please, please, please don't tell me you think he was 100% honest in his dealings. That would deserve the biggest of all.

As an HD DVD owner I hated the face he put on the format - the typical smug "We at Microsoft know everything" face. Ugh.

Why would Toshiba even want Disney after all the trash they've talked about hd-dvd? Heck, some people think Disney is more commited to BD than Sony Pictures so I hardly see them making any type of move.

Do you really think Toshiba would get Disney to go HD DVD exclusive? Neutral maybe. But not exclusive. And I don't think that WB, having now gone exclusive, would take it back and say, "No, nevermind, we're neutral again." I think both sides are starting to realize that this war is just losing them money, and they want it over.

Hmmm . . . not according to Warner Bros. They routinely touted their neutrality as a terrific money-making position. No, their reason for going BD-exclusive was out of their deep concern for the consumers and retailers. Remember?

With all due respect, I don't exactly consider arguing for the sake of stirring the pot to be "real discussions".

There are disingenuous comments and claims coming from both sides, in nearly equal volume.

Two demotions and then 'retirement' from MS were exactly what he deserved for all the FUD he spread.

I've spoken with Amir several times. He's a nice guy. It's sad that for some people, the format war is justification for wishing someone else ill.

While I was out this morning, I heard a radio ad touting HD-DVD and Toshiba's low priced players starting at $149. They mentioned the 5 title mail in offer and the interesting thing is that they seemed to imply that it's good through 2/28. So I'm wondering if they're scramblining to get a new form out or updated or if that was an error and meant 1/31, when the current form expires.

Well to clarify, I don't wish him ill, but I did find him very annoying.

Nice guy he may very well be, but he got carried away many times IMO.

My comment was specifically in reference to Hammer, who basically said that the way he posted on a message board was justification for him losing his job.

I saw that too...I think they had to be mailed in BY 2/28 if purchased before 1/31...maybe its changed? I'm still waiting to see if BDA is going to do another 5 free when their offer expires in a few days.

Out of all the studios, Disney has been the least vocal. Fox and Sony seem to be the usual ones talking trash about HD DVD, and Lionsgate only really spread that rumor a few months back. While Disney has some serious ad campaigns about Blu-ray, besides in print, there are not very vocal about HD DVD sucks.
