Bourne was #1 POT3 #2 HP5 Blu-ray #3 The difference between PT3 and HP5 was about 400 units...so it was VERY close. Bourne sold 3 discs for POT3 ever 2. So it would be safe to say Bourne 100% POT3 66% HP5 Blu-ray 65% HP5 HD DVD 64% Apparently, ACTUAL studio numbers (from ALL sources, not just Nielsen, according to Dave who has contacts etc.), show a much closer 1:1 for all Harry Potters across both formats, though the HD DVD boxset did slightly better then the Blu-ray one. Apparently its something like 1.05:1 Blu/HD. So numbers were close on both formats. Also, HSM2 and Lost Season 3 sold a little over 4k each according to Nielsens, and they did make the Top 20. HSM2 was a wildcard for some, and it bombed. I know a lot of people (including people here) thought it would do pretty good. We will see official Nielsens tomorrow, but Dave has yet to be wrong 5-6 weeks now and has posted the correct % days early. I, as well as just about everyone else, tends to trust him. |
I should also add that invites have gone out to the press etc. showing Warner being present at the 2 hour HD DVD presentation on Sunday night. Nothing on Blu-ray yet for its Monday 1 hour presentation...take that how you will.

Of course it is all subject to change. Warner could easily change their plan tomorrow and cancel their part of the presentation. |

They're in the HD DVD presentation so they can formally apologize in person for going BD exclusive. The rest of the 2 hours will then be spent laying out their exchange policy wherein HD DVD owners can trade all of their WB HD DVDs for BD versions. That's just my guess, though . . .;) |

Rock: Yes, and in order for everyone to be able to partake of the PiP goodness, they'll also be giving away new Profile 1.1 BD players to everyone with one of those titles.
Yavin: No cages, but the WB representatives will in fact actually be cyborgs not unlike the Terminator. If they assess that the audience response is too hostile, they will be programmed to lay waste to the entire crowd and then proceed to subjugate the rest of humanity. |

Of course it is all subject to change. Warner could easily change their plan tomorrow and cancel their part of the presentation. Plus, they've spent all of this money developing the interactive stuff for Harry Potter and trying out the new community feature. I don't think they'd go to all that trouble and then dump HD DVD a few weeks later. |
with the ps3 going 1.1 the community feature will be equally applicable to future bd releases (less the un-upgradable standalones sold so far). still, studios and ce manufacturers clearly don't care about consumers who bought early equipment which is now no longer cutting edge - witness the ruthless treatment of hd tv owners who only have analogue connections.

Thankfully the Image Constraint Token (or whatever) hasn't been imposed on any discs . . . yet . . . |

This error, the HP packaging fiasco, and supply issues has caused WB to look very sloppy lately.

Hopefully they will just stay neutral as they have been. |

But, hd-dvd exclusivity wouldn't surprise me as much as BD exclusivity. |

DEC. 21 | Fourth-quarter HD DVD releases The Bourne Ultimatum and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix are outpacing similarly high-profile Blu-ray titles, according to Universal Studios Home Entertainment and other industry research sources. In its first week on sale, starting Dec. 11, the Bourne single-disc HD DVD configuration sold 60,000 units, doubling the 30,000 units Spider-Man 3 sold during its street week in its similar individual Blu-ray SKU. Counting other configurations, including its BD trilogy, Spider-Man 3 reached higher six-day numbers, according to distributor Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Universal could only provide data on the Bourne single SKU. But the studio expects the pattern to continue when sales information can be gathered in the next several days for its own HD DVD Bourne trilogy set. Additionally, notes Universal research, Warner Home Video’s HD DVD release of Order of the Phoenix is edging out the titles’ BD version by a 55-to-45 ratio. Order of the Phoenix also streeted Dec. 11. That claim matches information gathered from Amazon.com sales rankings in recent weeks. These HD DVD success stories do mark a reversal from the overall trend of BD titles topping its rival. Generally, BD sales trump HD DVD sales by a 2-to-1 ratio. Ken Graffeo, Universal executive VP of marketing and co-president of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, acknowledges the continued, on average, BD strength over HD DVD software. But he believes it is significant that HD DVD is catching BD in terms of fourth-quarter new releases, as he believes it is a more apple to apples comparison of consumer purchasing behavior. These new box-office hits are not normally included in the primarily catalog ‘buy one, get one free’ deals. Popular with BD studios, these BOGO deals are enticing because consumers get two titles for 50% off the original price. But there is a question of how long studios can continue to support these promotions as they bring in considerably less money than regualarly-priced titles would. “I think the fourth quarter is going to be interesting,” said Graffeo. “If you break out the hits, I think we will be even. But the aggressive discounting, with catalog [of buy one, get one free offers], can inflate the numbers.” Graffeo believes that HD DVD is on an upswing with recent releases because of the surge in people buying HD DVD hardware, which also has been steadily discounted. Toshiba sold 90,000 players in a two-day period in November, thanks to Wal-Mart and Best Buy pricing HD DVD players below $100 for the first time. “This is a real testament to the momentum we are gaining with the set-top players,” said Graffeo. “We are beginning to realize the attach rate with movie sales.” |
I should add the Bourne "Trilogy Box set" is in fact the 3 pack from Amazon.

Dave Vaughn had already said that Harry on Blu had outsold Harry on Red. Wait, just saw the source, Universal research.
Plus, the author seems slightly confused on skus as well. |

Plus, the author seems slightly confused on skus as well. The one thing that is left out is that the first two Bourne flicks are available separately, but Spidey one and two are not, giving extra incentive to buy the three pack over the single SKU. I say add both three packs and single film releases and compare the two numbers, then divide by installed base and see how those two numbers compare. |
I dont even think it matters really. Bluray should be killing hd-dvd right now and its not. The Sony CEO has reason to be worried and its no surprise of his comments of late.
Im really starting to think WB will go hd-dvd exclusive soon. Maybe not at CES, but soon. |

Im really starting to think WB will go hd-dvd exclusive soon. Maybe not at CES, but soon. I just think that Sunday/Monday will be fun. I imagine a lot of us will just be sitting here and on other forums debating back and fourth whats going to happen. How soon after these events do we get news? Right away? |
