A2 failing to upconvert SD using HDMI to DVI? Anyone know why?

I just got a Toshiba A2, mostly to upconvert my SD collection, and I can't get an upconvert through my HDMI to DVI cable. Does DVI constrict this? and you have to use a HDMI to HDMI to upconvert...which means I'm screwed as my HD set is DVI in only. The player registers 1080i on the display but when I turn my TV off and then on (the res automatically pops on when I do this), the TV gives me a message saying the content is being switched to 480p.....Any ideas? Oh, and why the heck does the picture look a lot better with component than my HDMI to DVI cables? Sorry, some HD newbie questions...

Yes, it's possible that the HDCP is not registering with the HDMI-DVI cable, although, all DVI is HDMI without the audio.

As for the PQ, have you calibrated the inputs?

Make sure you have the latest firmware updates (currently 1.6)

What TV do you have; check your manual. Have you played an HD-DVD, and did it display at 1080i through the digital connection? I believe a number of early DVI sets were not HDCP compliant.
