There is a thread on Xbox forums talking about the update coming soon.

1. less than a week
2. yes your player should update itself if you're signed into live and attempt to play an hddvd. if you don't have a live connection, you should be able to download and burn the update to a cdrom.
3. as far as we can tell, we've fixed the problem to the point our a/v sync is better than the current toshiba firmware. so if there are subsequent issues, they'll most likely be content authoring problems.
4. i'll post on these forums, but majornelson.com as well as xbox.com will probably call it out as well.
thanks for your patience!

What exactly will this update supposedly do? Will it allow passthrough of DTS and TrueHD instead of having it as DD5.1? I've read conflicting posts elsewhere.

I'm not sure. But I did the spring update and the next time I turned on my 360 all I got where 3 red lights. So everything with this system is a gamble.

Here's the post.
Repeat of my post in the insider thread...
It is my pleasure to let you all know that the HD DVD udpate for Xbox 360 is slated for release on 5/15 (i.e. tomorrow!). So when you wake up in the morning, you should be able to upgrade your software. And me free from telling you when are going to get it . Hope you all download it and provide feedback on what you think!
And sorry I did not give more of a notice. I was out on the cruise and only now got around to getting the specific time/date for it.

- Fix DD being stuck in "Night Mode" which is essentially Dynamic Range Compression leading to the sound sounding very flat
- Option to output ALL HD DVD audio as DTS 1.5Mbps (list includes DD+, TrueHD, DTS, and any other audio option offered on HD DVD discs I may have missed)
- Option to output ALL HD DVD audio as DD 640Kbps, (which it currently does, but will be fixed from the Night Mode bug), list includes DD+, TrueHD, DTS, and any other audio option offered on HD DVD discs that I may have missed.
- Option to output ALL HD DVD audio as WMAPro 1.5Mbps, (list includes DD+, TrueHD, DTS, and any other audio option offered on HD DVD discs I may have missed) for those receivers that support WMA.
- Option to enable/disable Night Mode (with the default set to off)
- Fix a number of disc incompatibilities (including DVD Essentials) as well as a number of Lip Sync issues.
This update is SEPARATE from the Spring Dashboard Update that came out on May 7, 2007.

Yep. Got the update. Also wasn't able to really check the sound out. But it did fix the issue with 3X DVDs (HD DVD content burned to a standard DVD). The menus now work. However, if anyone even cares about these types of DVDs, if you let a motion menu play to the end, it gets stuck. Still, it's a significant improvement that it doesn't crash the 360 immediately.

Be aware that the settings to the new digital out options are not set within the "system blade" you have to hit the display button on your remote while a movie is in and it will bring up the bottom bar which will have a digital audio out button where you can set this to the new formats (your choice is remembered after setting it the first time).

The problem is with the disk not the 360 HD DVD.Universal is doing an exchange with people that are having problems.I have no problems with Cof M or Good Shephard.

So I have a couple of questions:
1. What does the dynamic range option do?
2. Was this update supposed to fix the low volume level problem? Because it still seems like I have to crank up the volume when watching an HD-DVD and then crank it back down when going back to videogames.
