2.1 firmware for A1/XA1 is available

UPDATE April 4: Avs forum members reporting MAJOR HDMI->DVI issues and even some HDMI-HDMI issues. As in NO PICTURE.

-------
My original post from yesterday.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q1. What does this update do?

A1. This firmware update adds support for certain anticipated network delivered content in future HD DVD discs, improves certain video and audio processing capabilities, as well as addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related problems identified by Toshiba.

Q2. The HDMI output does not work or works intermittently with the HDMI or DVI input on my HDTV or monitor. Does the new firmware address that problem?

A2. The firmware update addresses and improves HDMI and DVI connectivity. If you still experience problems, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable. Make sure your display input is set to HDMI (or DVI). If your display has more than one HDMI/DVI input, make sure that all connected HDMI/DVI source devices are powered on (even if not in use). If none of these solve the problem, please turn off the TV and the HD DVD player. Check all connections. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable. Turn on the TV first and then turn on the HD DVD player. Should you continue to experience problems, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.

Q3. During HD DVD playback I sometimes experience pixelization, block noise or audio dropouts. Sometimes playback stops. Sometimes, playback is not smooth. Does the new firmware address these issues?

A3. This firmware update, which includes material from prior updates, addresses various playability issues. You should also check to be sure that the disc is clean and, if the disc will not operate at all, that you are inserting the disc with the right side up. Should you continue to experience problems, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.
HDMI/DVI - YES! I need this one.
playback issues - keeping fingers crossed that this will allow me to play rental discs.

Finally! Everything I've read on AVS regarding 2.1 was disc playback is supposed to be greatly improved. Those shitty glitches should cease after 2.1.....*fingers crossed*.

Supermallet 04-03-07 12:57 PM

Is this available now?

Damed 04-03-07 12:57 PM

Damn it! I won't be able to update until Thurs night (I won't be home...)

someone PLEASE post a link to an image file if/when you get the CD.

Yay, 2.1!

fryinpan1 04-03-07 01:20 PM

Hopefully, this will fix any problems people may have with the first generation players.

Lord Rick 04-03-07 01:23 PM

It's available right now if you have your A1/XA1 connected to the internet.

No need for a CD (which is supposed to be 3 weeks).

Supermallet 04-03-07 01:23 PM

Well, I'm trying to download it now. It's been sitting at 0% for a while. Servers are probably hammered.

FantasticVSDoom 04-03-07 01:26 PM

Sounds good... Will do when I get home.

Mr. Cinema 04-03-07 01:33 PM

One AVS member says his update took 20 minutes. He had playback issues with Hollywoodland on his A1. That's now corrected. He also says the boot time is a bit faster.

The A1 is slow and a bit glitchy, but it's still a damn fine player. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. It's a well built machine.

Agree 100%. I've had only one major issue with my A1, and it turned out to be a defective copy of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.. so I can't blame that on the player.

It's been very good to me.

Supermallet 04-03-07 01:51 PM

Now I'm at 65% and the download time seems to be increasing.

I don't have mine connected to the net, so I called for a disc this afternoon. They told me 3 weeks as well, plus another week for shipping.

DthRdrX 04-03-07 03:35 PM

Ahh!! I have no blank cd-rs laying around! I've never been able to get my A1 connected correctly via the ethernet hookup either!

Ironically, that's something that's fixed with 2.1 . . .

;)

Does anyone know if Enemy at the Gates (Stalingrad) will work with fw 2.1?

I have never had any HDMI problems until this update.

DVD - HDMI erro 0
HD DVD - No HDMI link

I tried everything in the FAQ. Guess I will be calling Toshiba tomorrow. :(

PornoStar 04-03-07 11:29 PM

Hey Super can you post the link for where you dowload the disc image? I dont feel like going throw the mess of hooking up my player as myinternet connection in my living room isnt working for some reason. Would appreciate it.

Thx

PS..

Just Lurking 04-04-07 12:12 AM

UPDATE: I having the HDMI -> DVI issue so I switch component and HDMI/DVI cable between HD DirecTiVo and A1. Atleast I have video from everything again.

On the brightside, Happy Feet had just a brief hiccup at 28:49 instead of complete lockup.

Here's to Toshiba fixing this issue quickly.

I guess I won't be rushing to update then.

Mine turned out fine.

I haven't tried any HD DVDs yet. It's been weeks since I've experienced any glitches. Children of Men, which is a problem disc, was okay for me before 2.1. And I've got a launch day unit, with a build of Feb '06.

Mr. Cinema 04-04-07 08:01 AM

My connection is HDMI-HDMI.

candyrocket786 04-04-07 08:35 AM

Updated last night.

- Took roughly about 45-50 minutes via my Wireless Gaming Adapter (Linksys)
- Unplugged the unit for a couple of minutes after the update was complete
- Reconnected and went into the setup menu to "Initialize"
- After the intialization, I had to reconfig the V.output to "HDMI"
- Watched "Children of Men" flawlessly. :D

Connection is HDMI to HDMI

FantasticVSDoom 04-04-07 08:49 AM

Well, Im updating now with HDMI-DVI... Will report if I have any issues.

Doughboy 04-04-07 09:44 AM

HDMI-HDMI for me.

FantasticVSDoom 04-04-07 10:14 AM

So far no problems here with my HDMI-DVI... I dont thin the fw shortened the load time at all though.

Lord Rick 04-04-07 10:48 AM

Loaded 2.1 this morning. HDMI->DVI is busted for me, too.

My setup
A1->PJTX100 projector. If I had an HDMI switch or receiver, I would try that, but I don't. One user on AVS reported that with an HDMI capable receiver in the path, everything worked fine. As soon as he connected directly from A1 to display, he loses video.

Time to call Toshiba.

FantasticVSDoom 04-04-07 02:25 PM

Hmmm... Well mine does go through a reciever, so. But I have to say, I have never had any of the problems people have had with the A1 (knock on wood...)

bboisvert 04-04-07 02:28 PM

I'm having absolutely ZERO playback issues w/2.0... I don't think I've had a single disc that has skipped or had any problems. So I think I'm skipping 2.1. I don't see anything here that would improve my experience, so I'm not going to roll the dice.

Just Lurking 04-04-07 02:47 PM

I opened a file with Toshiba rgarding the 2.1 HDMI/DVI issue. The guy was really nice but at the end of the conversation suggest upgrading to 2.1 firmware. :helpme: He said 2.1 is better than 2.0 ecause of HDMI handsake problems.

ChrisHicks 04-04-07 02:47 PM

since I run HDMI --> DVI direct to the tv I think I'm skipping this update for now.

I'm only using component to my RPTV since it dates back to 2001 and has no HDMI capability (and my A1 has had very little playback problems with firmware version 2.0). As of now, I don't see the value in doing the FW 2.1 upgrade. Am I missing something here? Unless there is a real benefit that I can appreciate, I'll pass since it appears to cause more harm than good.

bunkaroo 04-04-07 03:50 PM

I have zero issues with 2.0 as well. I played Hollywoodland flawlessly.

Is there still a known black crush issue with the HDMI output? That's the only reason I haven't been using HDMI. My last TV was calibrated for the component inputs so I wasn't using HDMI-DVI on that anyway, but I have a new display with multiple HDMI ports, so I've been considering using HDMI now.
