Anyone tried new LG hybrid player?

Was in BB ad this week and was wondering if anyone got it and what they thought.

I let out a sigh when I saw it was released if it works well and the price comes down it might be where I finally take the jump someday.

But in my expierence when you get something that does 2 jobs usually you lose something.

Not always but just curious how it performs.

I can't pay $1200 for an LG product. I think that machine is DOA.

Remember? This is the HD DVD-crippled (hD DVD-lite, depending on how you want to say it). It's got full BD features AFAIK, but the HD DVD side is compromised.

You just reminded me that there's a full page ad for it in the new Entertainment Weekly. I was going to scan it and post it here.

If you have $1200, you're probably better off getting a A2 and a PS3 instead.

By "full BD features", do you mean it actually has BD-J capabilities? Isn't that a first for a BD component player?

Geoffrey Morrison at Home Theater Magazine is supposed to have his review posted some time this week . . .

Exactly.

What the hell are they thinking with the pricing of this unit?

If you get the A2 through Amazon and the PS3 through Sonystyle.com, you actually only end up paying $779.

That $400 then buys you, what? Twenty titles?

Yeah, my A1 and PS3 combined were over $200 cheaper than that unit. Plus my A1 and PS3 will do things that player will not.

That's way too much money for me to spend on a product of its kind. Either way, I've already purchased an HD-DVD player (I got the 360 attachment,) as well as a PS3.

I really don't like the concept of an all in one player that is inferior and more expensive than two separate players. I'm crossing my fingers for a Denon that does HD DVD/Blu-ray/DVD/SACD/DVD-A/CD and does them all very well. I'll pay $1500+ for that player.

The LG player is great if (1) you only really care about movie playback (HDi not important), (2) you want just one HD device, and (3) price is not an issue.

It certainly plays back movies very well but ... don't you want a little more than that from a $1200 player?

That I could get behind.

You mention its known lack of HDi support, but let me again put forward my previous question: does it actually support BD-J? If not, then it really isn't fully functional for EITHER format.

If this gets cheaper and more reliable, it'll make me finally make the jump to HD. I would like it to also play DVD-Audio and SACD though. I like things that can play as many formats as possible- my main DVD player right now is still a Laserdisc/DVD player since I don't have a high-def TV yet.
