Blu-Ray is now cracked...

It was only a matter of time.

I'm wondering how long until they can figure out how to make an HD DVD out of BD files...or vice versa.

I knew all along it wouldn't take long for both formats to be cracked.

You're right, it'll be interesting to see if piraters will release BDs of HD DVDs and vice versa. I don't condone this activity but I admit I might be tempted if the quality is equal to the originals as it should be.

The real question is will this effect release dates of upcoming titles as I'm sure at least Fox is going to want to revert to BD+ asap.

Does this mean that Blu-Ray's encryption is better than HD-DVDs since it took a week longer, or does this mean that Blu-Rays (supposedly superior) encryption is actually inferior since HD-DVD has been available for longer?

Both hacks are against AACS, so I'd say it was that they just targeted HD-dvd first. It only took him an hour to figure it out on Blu-Ray.

BTW: Copies of at least 5 HD-dvd titles are floating around the torrent and filesharing sites.

I give them another week to crack BD+ once it's enabled.

The same plaintext method was used on both formats. If anything, it appears the person who done the cracking only targeted HD DVD first due to the fact that is the format he owns. He done the BLU RAY without owning any actual BLU RAY hardware, from what I understand.

BD+ will also be cracked whenever they decide to go towards that.

I love it. One less thing for BD studios to use as a talking point. I especially love the big up yours this gives to FOX.

Maybe someday the studios will realize that they are fighting a lost cause and that this has a much smaller effect on their sales then they realize.

The cracking of either HD format is no big deal right now, people who support piracy generally don't care about quality. And its cheaper to buy an HD movie then it is to buy a recorder and black media.

The problem with producing HD DVD versions of BDs though, is that BD has a higher maximum bitrate, so encodings that go higher than HD DVD's peak rate would not work if transferred to an HD DVD (unless they can remove something, like PCM tracks).

Yeah, this is funny. For all the studios that went to Blu-Ray for the supposed extra protection, screw you!

Meaning? It's ok to steal if you aren't a billionaire?

Glad I don't live next to you, I'd have to check my garage every day, see if my stuff is still there.

Actually, this is what Fox was worried about. Now they can implement BD+ to fight back.

Yeah, screw you Fox. That'll show you to mess with some guy on DVDTalk!

I swear some people have taken this whole format "war" way too personally.

And we thought the videogame fanboys were bad...

Huh? The extra protection on BD hasn't even been implemented yet. This is the same crack that was applied to HD-DVD since both formats use this, only that was their ONLY line of protection.

If you read the thread about the crack, they are already theorizing about how to crack BD+. They have every confidence that it will be done. I personally believe it will take them a couple of months since it is going to be a bit more complex getting the info they need out of memory. I own exactly zero pirated movies - hell, I don't even download music off the Internet so I have no horse in the race as far as a need for these to be cracked, but I hated all the talk about how secure BD was and that was why it was better. Security will be cracked - period, the more you talk about how secure it is, the faster and harder they are going to work to defeat it.

From what I have read on different borads is slysoft already support hd-dvd. Why would one spend more on making a copy vs just buying the real deal?

What good is it if it isn't even being used?

It will be.

But realistically, that will be broken too. None of this matters and is not a surprise. I'm amazed at companies that think they can have software copy protection. Hardware copy protection is the only way they would stand a small chance.
