Which is why in CES 2006, Warner, Universal and Paramount announced more than forty HD DVD movie titles.

WB tends to release in "waves". When we get the next list of WB dates, there will be like 20-30 of them.

All this talk of the downfall of HD-DVD based on BD release dates and no product in stores or for review is poppycock. My manacle is broken.

I never said it was inappropriate. I just said that it wasn't what CES is truly about.

I can see a larger point behind WB announcing 40 titles at last year's CES than I can for them to do the same this year. Last year was the introduction of the format, remember, and they needed to show there was going to be software backing the format. This year, they are demonstrating the format's continued superiority in 1) cost to the consumer, and 2) storage space.

I, too, have been a bit disheartened by the events at CES, but I realize it's in large part just from reading these whiny posts! Sure, I'd like to see more studios switch over, and of course I'd like to see more titles added to the available catalogue. However, I think our expectations leading up to this event have been a bit misguided . . .

Nevermind. Does the same thing an Xbox 360 core system does, except it can't play games or DVDs.

Well. Here's something interesting. Apple's new screen is 160 pixels per inch. A 720p image resolves to about a half sheet of paper. That's also enough to hold a disc.

I'd say in a year or two we should be seeing next-gen players that let you play HD DVD or Blu-Ray on the go with a higher resolution than regular DVDs.

iTV.... pay Apple money to have a box that allows you to pay Apple more money for PPV programming.
Sorry, I have OnDemand thru cable and I don't have to run my XPS computer at the same time when I want to watch it.

Yeah, I think so. Probably due to the cost of living being lower and people are able to afford extras. Also, there are ALOT of tech jobs in the DFW area and techies (like me) are usually into the latest/greatest. I know a few of my friends at work are on the hd-dvd bandwagon too.

As far as releases, I have no doubt that HD-DVD will be releasing movies this year. BUT, I think they sorely underestimated CES and the anticipation.

I dont buy the CES is about hardware either (someone else said). Without the movies, none of us would be buying the hardware. Last year, they promised ALOT of HUGE titles. Alot of them havent shown up AND they were silent this CES. Thats whats scary.

Well, you may not "buy" it but that's most certainly what it is.

Apple's set-top-box is a computer in itself. But.. it doesn't appear to be a DVR. So it offers some of what you can get with your cable box, Xbox 360, and PS3.

The killer PC-in-the-living room is a DVR, with choices of a download service (just like with a PC you can pick), and playback of all kinds of media. At best, we're 50 or 60% of the way there with today's current solutions.

I am just glad the Wienstiens are HD DVD exlusive last time i checked they left Miramax and dimension with some Exlusive Titles , some horror titles Disney wanted nothing to do with them ... HD DVD will have them.

Btw everyone they announced 300 titles that is enough for an entire year so they didn't give release dates those titles will be coming and unless i am retarded i don't expect 300 titles just to apear in any given month , i am thinking 300 from feb till dec that is pretty damn good.

25 titles a month doesn't sound too bad.

Clearly it's not BD but...still, nothing to sneeze at.

So is the 300 figure from all supporting studios or just WB?

I'm sorry. Weinstein company has some interesting stuff but Miramax blows the catalogue out of the water. The only plus is a lot of the Miramax stuff is foreign and hopefully Studio Canal or someone else will release it on HD DVD internationally.

Arguing that HD DVD has the better selection in movies (considering the entire studio's library) is ludicrous. The BD-aligned studios (including WB) have more movies in the IMDB Top 250, more movies in the BFI lists, more movies per share of box office grosses, you name it.

Now that BD is releasing titles people actually want and may have more than one option for a player under $900, HD DVD needs to keep on its toes.

If 300 titles are coming out, they should have announced at least 60 of those. If they have 300 titles it means they know what titles are coming out. It's not so hard to just let us know what a few of those are. At least give us Q2, Q3 if not exact dates.

Well... I'm not spending $500 a month on optical media.

That's just bonkers.

Does the 300 titles include foreign releases in that total? If so, the real number may be around 200 titles in 12 months (the usual four or so titles a week).

The bus stops here , hey bus ,Universal alone has over 300 titles that it could release all alone. they have a library so big that goes back to the 1920's also Universal is producing METAL GEAR so imagine that if the format war goes on for another 2 years METGAL GEAR would only be available on HD DVD lolol the irony of that. Also Universal has Alot of bigger guns then Sony , disney and Fox combine.
