Steady on, people... who says there won't be any news at CES?

Sony has been begging for more time to prove their strategy, IMV.

If a studio has given them till the end of January, then so be it - it won't change much.

All my opinion and speculation, of course

But I don't think their master-plan included having a quarter of a million HD DVD players out there!

It's a quarter of a million now! At this rate, by the end of the year they'll have one million players! Bwahahahaha!!

Wow that figure gets exaggerated more and more each time it's mentioned. Last I read HD DVD player sales were well under 100,000.

Er, guys - standalone players, yes, said to be 70,000.

HD DVD addon said be about 200,000 shipped for Christmas.

Don't see why you'd try so hard to ridicule a quarter million (oh, of course I know whjy you'd try so hard! )

Oh well, i'm sure Universal and WB will be more than happy to take more of it.
That sums up my thoughts pretty accurately.

This is what I have as possible realistic announcements from the BD group in terms of software:

Fox: possible plans for X-men 1 and 2.

Disney: Pirates 1 and 2, maybe a hint for Cars for Q4

Sony: DaVinci Code for sure, Casino Royale, Spiderman 1 and 2

for hardware, I would say Samsung will show off their G2 player. Maybe Panasonic as well.

Well in all fairness, it's not quite as fictitious as the eleventy billion PS3 players that will ship by the end of the year, all of which will be used to play BR movies.

Both formats will be around for the foreseeable future. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either an idiot or has an agenda.

In the interim, I'll just continue to buy both formats where needed, and when a title is available in both formats, I buy HD-DVD.

Simple.

Not only are Fox and Disney losing HD DVD sales, they're also losing (my) DVD sales. I'm not buying anymore DVDs, aside from maybe some Criterions. I haven't bought Dead Man's Chest, won't be buying Little Miss Sunshine, etc. I'm waiting for them to go high-def and until I have a PS3 (which might be end of next year), I won't be buying anything in Blu-Ray.

It's incredible that Warner Bros. and Paramount are the only two studios who have any brains at all.

My prediction for Universal Titles for CES:

Inside Man
United 93
Dawn of the Dead
A Spielberg Movie
And the big shocker, a Hitchcock Movie.

As for Warner:

Ocean's 12 maybe 11 as well
Green Mile
L.A. Confidential
Twister
JFK
Heat
Harry Potter. Goblet of Fire, maybe all of them.
and a Kubrick Movie.

I love that Disney list, but how long till we see all of the first four? 2 maybe 3 years, maybe more. We all know how Disney operates, and they love to stretch out their big titles as much as possible. If they came out and said that they would put Aladdin, Finding Nemo, Beauty & the Beast, and the Lion King out by the end of 2008 that would be a HUGE boost for Blu-Ray. But in reality I bet we don't see any of the Major disney animated movies before x-mas of next year.

How about a movie from Señor Spielbergo?

I kinda doubt we'll see one from him too, but i can wish. Maybe we'll at least get one he produced or something.

No, rdjam . Just that some key information is missing. From wikipedia

Generalization using weasel words
Generalization by means of grammatical quantifiers (few, many, people, etc.), as well as the passive voice ("it has been decided") are also part of weasel wording. Generalization in this way helps speakers or writers disappear in the crowd and thus disown responsibility for what they have said.

"People say…" (Who are the people who say it?)
"Few of those who knew the truth have spoken up for …" (Which people knew the truth and should have spoken up?)
"It has been decided that..." (Who decided?)
"It turns out that..." (How, and why, did it "turn out" that way?)
In the following phrases, an indication of where or how the stories started would have removed the weaseling effect:

"It has been mentioned he has embezzled money." (Who mentioned it?)
"Rumour has it that she sleeps around with just about anybody." (Where was this rumour published or spread? Who is included in the group that is just about anybody?)
"There is evidence that..." (What evidence? Where is it? What are the details?)
"A source states that..." (What is the source? Is it reliable?)
There are some forms of generalization which are considered unacceptable in standard writing. This category embraces what is termed a semantic cop-out, represented by the term allegedly. This phrase, which became something of a catch-phrase on the weekly satirical BBC television show, Have I Got News For You, implies an absence of ownership of opinion which casts a limited doubt on the opinion being articulated.

Is that just a guess, or has he made a public comment?

Because I've gotten no sense that he's "anti-HD" (or anti-DVD, for that matter). Jaws came out with a pretty spiffy DVD only 3 years after the launch of the format. That's pretty quick.

Plus, while Jaws or Jurassic would be great, don't forget that Universal also has a few "minor" Spielbergs in their catalog: Duel, The Sugarland Express, 1941, Always. I wouldn't rule any of those out.

And I also wouldn't be surprised to see something like Jaws (although I think E.T. is unlikely and Jurassic will probably wait until '08 for the theatrical release of part 4).

You mean key information like more movies will be bought for each HD DVD add-on player sold than for each PS3 sold?

I mean statistics coming from somewhere else than a fanboy's sphincter.
