i'm sick of..
combo discs.
i sent universal a letter not long ago to help out a fellow poster here, and now they are releasing half their library on single discs. i would like to believe that was because of us.
would you guys mind doing the same with WB? alot of their new movies coming out would be great, except they're combos. combos mean no sale for myself and many others.

Combos are terrific. I wish the pricing were less, also, but that's mostly because HD DVDs aren't being discounted by the retailers. At least not like SD DVDs, anyway . . .

I'm sick of...
thread titles that don't explain what the thread is really about until you click on them.
Are you mainly upset because it's more expensive, or because it's basically a flipper?

Here's a nice common sense article from Digital Bits today about HD-DVDs. It says the exact same thing I've been saying for months & some people just can't accept. So, I doubt Fox will be releasing HD-DVDs & Universal very well could release BluRay.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...oap060107.html
And about the combos, you people who bought them for a future HD player may be screwed. Many of the Universal combo discs are defective, and you'll never know until it's way too late to exchange. So you just spent $35 for a dvd. THAT'S the reason why there haven't been as many combos recently. Many of the combos were cancelled & released as HD-only (The Jerk was one, and it still told you to check the other side on the menu, even though it was no longer a combo). And if you don't believe me, this is also from Digital Bits about replacements & the fact that Universal does acknowledge they made faulty discs.
"One other quick note today, Universal has informed us that they're currently in replication on those corrected/fixed versions of Children of Men and The Good Shepherd (the DVD/HD-DVD Combo discs, which have been having playback and compatibility issues on many brands of HD-DVD players, apparently due to a slightly too thick bonding layer). They expect to start having the fixed discs available for exchange as early as next week. For now, use this e-mail address to arrange exchanges: [email protected] (we'll have a phone number for you next week)."
So go ahead & buy lots of more expensive combos, then you can be really mad when you have to rebuy them all for BluRay. I have both now (110 Blu, 60HD) & only buy Universal on HD now & everything else on Blu, so I won't have to rebuy too much.

Dear lord, it's a fucking shouting match between AICN and The Digital Bits. Does anyone take either of those sites seriously anymore? I'm glad DVDTalk as a website does not officially support one format or the other, especially as I'm going to be writing the HD column soon and I wouldn't want to be strapped to either format while they are both actively being made, as they both have pros and cons.

Blu Bits? Did you see the totally incorrect & almost opposite information they had on AICN? Only 60 some Blu Ray titles?? Only HD-DVD plays dvds & upconverts? And Digital Bits supports both, but using common sense they're saying that they would recommend BluRay because of the many detailed & completely true reasons they gave. What did they say that isn't true? They said how much they like HD-DVD, but because of studios & manufacturers siding with BluRay pretty much down the line, it would take a miracle for HD to prevail.

I think they are a great idea. I have one HD-DVD player and 3 DVD players, not to mention my computers.
I can watch those discs on every player I have. I fail to see the downside.

The only problem I have with combos is pricing.
To this day I have never encountered any of these "combo problems" on my first gen player. All discs have played through from start to finish flawlessly.

• Manufacturing difficulties may lead to defective discs (something that SD DVD-18s were notorious for and that has already been a problem for a few Universal combo titles).
• They are being priced $5 more than HD only discs. (Unlike you, I don't have multiple DVD players hooked up to multiple displays; why pay for something I will never use?)
• No disc art. Yes, it is a little thing, but I prefer my discs to have only one shiny side.
That said, if prices for combos ever get as low as for single sided discs, I will probably buy them, albeit reluctantly. For now, I don't have a single combo in my HD DVD collection. I have "Netflixed" several.

Yea, I think he finally opened the door to be called the blu-bits when he states "we have picked Blu-Ray as out format of choice".

Yeah, Universal alone makes HD-DVD worth it for me. Dune, Fear & Loathing, 12 Monkeys, Big Lebowski, Fast Times, Animal House, etc. They do have a great back catalog, but their newer releases haven't been so great. And I was linking that article to let people know that the extra price of a combo for something that may not be around long, may not be worth it.
And I realize many people have portable dvd players, etc. that can't play HD-DVDs, but I'm guessing most people who adopted hD early also have a decent dvd collection. Why not just play a dvd in those situations? If you really need to show someone that movie, wouldn't you want it to be the HD version. And why watch it on a small screen in sd when you could watch it later in HD? I've already traded in about 80 dvds that I've rebought in HD now. Why would I want to watch them any other way now? Is it every life-threatingly important to watch one certain movie in your car or whatever, rather than watch it when you get home in HD? And the price difference isn't $5. The last few Universal HD singles I got were 19.95 from Amazon, and the combos are 27.95. The actual retail difference is $10. You could almost buy the dvd seperately for that.
