Hollywood Video To Rent Blu-Rays

FYI

Talked to a guy at the local Hollywood Video this week and he stated that they had decided on Blu-Ray. He said they would start carrying them next month to rent. YMMV

This is not a chain wide decision - this is a local decision. The Manager at my local Movie Gallery - same company - said they have both in the computer but have not started carrying either yet.

Mine has both, but why get raped to the tune of $5 per movie every time you rent one?

Aren't all rentals this expensive now? It's still cheaper than buying one for $30 (at Best Buy).

Absolutely agree that netflix is the way to go. Our local HV rents both HD and BD but for $5+ per disc it's much more economical and convenient to use Netflix. I've considered getting a netflix account for a while now and the cost of HD (rent or buy) pushed me to do it.

If i'm only going to rent 1 or 2 a month, Netflix would be more expensive though, right? I haven't checked rates lately.

I think netflix will be cheaper, even if you only get a couple per month.

From their website current pricing Levels:
1 at-a-time (2 a month) - just $4.99 a month
1 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $9.99 a month
2 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $14.99 a month
3 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $17.99 a month
4 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $23.99 a month
5 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $29.99 a month
6 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $35.99 a month
7 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $41.99 a month
8 at-a-time (Unlimited) - just $47.99 a month

Factor in the convenience of not driving to and from B&M and the 80,000 title inventory and it seems like you can't lose.

We rarely ever rented DVD - generally bought during sales or once prices dropped to the $5-7 range. HD may never reach those prices so netflix seems like a reasonable alternative. We opted for three out at a time at $18/month ($216/year) - if you estimate $25/title retail you'd only see about 9 films/year for that money although you would of course own them.
