Under display settings what do you use? I have a 46" Sony rear projection LCD. Do you use 720p or 1080i. I also have the HD-DVD drive.

If you play games where just stare at a picture(who can stare at the dashboard the longest game), then you want 1080i.
If you play games where things move, you want 720p.

I have (possibly) the same TV and have had my 360 set to 1080i for the past year. Every game or HD-DVD has looked perfect...doesnt the 360 just set it to 720p if thats the max for that particular title? Or does it upconvert everything to whatever you have your dash set at?

I use 1080i for both watching movies and playing games as 1080i, at least on my TV, is a huge improvment over the 720p setting. I get absolutly beautiful results with 1080i. My advice would be to just go with what looks the best. You can easily switch between the different screen settings and see which one gives you the best picture. For me its a no brainer at 1080i, its just a much much better picture than the 720p setting.

I have tried both and honestly can tell no difference either.

I think it would be more helpful to others if you indicate the monitor you're using.
JVC 61" D-ILA (LCoS technology), sitting 9' away and here's what I've noticed...
When the dashboard setting is set to my monitor's native resolution of 720, games look good and motion is flawless. When set to 1080i, I notice slightly more details and a slightly sharper picture when playing Gears of War. However, during the cut-scenes (particularly when there is a lot of motion), I notice many lines running across the picture, on faces of the characters, and on objects. It makes the cut-scene look a little messy. It's strange that this doesn't affect gameplay. Because of that, I've set the dashboard to output at 1080i for my games.

I have a 46" Sony KDF46E2000. I have notices blocky spots when there is al ot of action. This is set to 720p. Not really blocky spots but I think it's what they call "screen door effect". I know there isn't much I can do about it but I've noticed it alot during COD3. I'll try 1080i this weekend. During movies I dont notice the screen door effect at all.

SDE refers to seeing a grid on the screen due to the gaps between pixels, and is a TV effect only. SDE cannot come from a source like the Xbox. I think you are describing something else. Perhaps pixelization or macroblocking. It sounds like Centurion was seeing some interlacing artifacts, like scan lines.
