A Few Questions for You Guys

A Few Questions for You Guys
I was thinking seriously about getting the 360 HD-DVD player. I like the fact that I can get King Kong with it, as that movie is a guilty pleasure of mine and has become one of my favs of the last few years. Anyhow, I started thinking about which movies I would absolutely must have to upgrade. I don't plan on updating all 1000 of movies. Right now I started thinking about 20 of my favorite movies of all time that I would upgrade. When I started making my list there were a few that were pretty high on the list that are Sony owned and will never be on HD-DVD. Taxi Driver and Leon the Professional to name a couple. Now certainly you guys that are rooting for one over the other must have thought about this. What are you gonna do? Are the HD-DVD supporters eventually gonna get a Blu-Ray player? Are the Blu-Ray supporters gonna get an HD-DVD player? Do any of you guys have both? What is the general consensus of this? I see so many supporting HD-DVD but how could you support a format that will never get Spider-Man, Bottle Rocket, Desperado, Ghostbusters, The Fifth Element or even classics like Dr. Strangelove?
Right now I cannot support either side. There are too many movies on both sides that I want.

I may consider a BD player at some point (next fall at the earliest), but for now I'm buying what I can on HD-DVD. Honestly, the BD studios haven't been releasing that many movies that I want, and I'm waiting to see if they go back and re-encode their early releases. The lack of titles I want, combined with the high player prices, just make BD not worth buying to me at this point in time. It's not as if there's a shortage of HD-DVD titles; out of all the studios on both formats, the one that has been doing the best job of releasing its catalog (IMHO) is easily Warner, with Universal second.
There's also the chance, however slim, that HD-DVD could just win this thing and I'd never have to get a BD player. We'll see what happens.

HDDVD for now; if/when BD is the winner, and gets cheaper hardware, I'll be interested in it. A grand is too much for me, and I'm not interested in fighting for a PS3.
I'd say if you can get the XBox add on for a good price and you can afford it, go for it, and wait for BD to drop or become more widespread or at least learn to optimize their disks.
It's like the choice in video game consoles--you can get a 360 and a Wii for the same price as a PS3.
Ultimately, of course, it comes to content--which format has more titles you're interested in now, or confirmed for near future, and is the hardware buy-in cost worth those movies?

I wouldn't get a Blu-Ray player strictly for Sony titles. Sony's standard DVDs are often very sub-par in the quality department, so I don't anticipate them getting much better for Blu-Ray. The right Fox and Buena Vista titles, however, would probably get me to buy a Blu-Ray player at some time, assuming, of course, the hardware prices come down to something that doesn't resemble a mortgage payment. At the moment, though, titles and prices aren't doing it for me.

I've got the A1, the 360 add-on, and the Sammy BD players. I said I would wait to jump into BD, but a few things happened:
- Sammy price went down
- the Sammy firmware fix got good press
- BD PQ/AQ also got started getting better reviews
Now, all things being equal, I'll still buy an HD-DVD title over the BD counterpart, ... & I'm still hesitant to buy a BD title without seeing a review first. But the latest BDs I've bought (particularly the Fox titles) are on the same level as the HD-DVD's re: PQ & AQ. The overall best BD title I've seen yet is Ice Age: Meltdown...reference PQ, simply stunning eye-candy. Even though I much preferred Corpse Bride HD-DVD as a movie, I have to give the nod to Ice Age, the PQ is that amazing.
Bottom line, I found I just don't have the time or patience for a format war, I want my HD dammit! I'm a lot happier now that I have both.

I'm also figuring in a year's time, the Blu-ray releases will be much better than they are now in terms of extras and the price of the players will be more reasonable.
And even if the HD-DVD format dies out entirely, that doesn't mean the discs I already own will suddenly be rendered unplayable.

Studio support is where my bread is buttered, which is why I only considered Blu-Ray (plus the thought of never getting Leon in HD didn't help HD-DVD either). I blind buy most of my DVD's so I need steady support coming at all times. I didn't buy in until a couple of months ago, when I requested and saw demos of Stealth and Tears of The Sun and I knew the alleged problems with early titles had been remedied. Bought the latest build Samsung which worked beautifully and the FW upgrades made it even better. As far as buying into HD-DVD, it will probably never happen since I don't want to begin collecting movies in two formats at the same time, taking up rack space and HDMI connections (especially since I have multiple HT setups in my house).

The day Fight Club is released you can consider me a Blu-ray supporter until then, looking at the current line up, not a chance. Hopefully the studios will start supporting both.

Alien Quadrilogy for me. But yes, at some point, when the software and hardware are good enough and reasonably priced, I could see myself getting a BD player. As it is, I've got tons of awesome HD DVDs to watch. Today it's Casablanca.

I can live with the SD DVD's of Sony's movies.

Like others, one day I will have a BD player, and probably sooner than I would care to admit. For now though, I am extremely happy with my A1 and it will hold me over for a while.

I'm not opposed to getting a Blu-ray player once it's affordable(i.e. under 400 bucks) and there are enough titles that interest me. It would also help if studios would ditch MPEG-2 and adopt a lower MSRP than $39.95.

If you really want to play the "potential" game, Universal has a massive catalog of great movies that won't be released on Blu-ray.

Until then, there are a number of interesting titles on HD DVD to watch and essentially no "must haves" yet released on BD. That will surely change someday, but it has surprised me how poor the choice of titles released by BD-only studios has been thus far.
Right now I cannot support either side. There are too many movies on both sides that I want.
