I'm not saying he was.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm suggesting. Criticizing Blu-ray is fine. I just want it to be people with an established interest in Blu-ray posting those sorts of articles, and I'd like them to do it in a Blu-ray thread.

I am in no way suggesting that the original topic was posted with any sort of malice in mind, but it seemed very likely to me that the thread would inevitably wind up being another anti-Blu-ray thread.

I didn't remove the links to the articles. I'm not stopping anyone from commenting on them in the appropriate places. I'm just tired of the format war hassle, and I'm tired of banning/suspending people.

Something has to give, and I personally think the forum's become a much more pleasant place since the emphasis has changed to enthusiast discussion from "my format's better than yours!"

Hmmm, there are two ways to interpret that last sentence and I can't figure out which way you meant it to be read...

While the versus thread had a certain peverse entertainment value, something like rubbernecking at a car wreck, after a few weeks under the new regime, I'm inclined to agree with you.

This comes from The Digital Bits:

Meanwhile, Universal Home Entertainment has gotten back to us this afternoon with a bit of news regarding their high-def plans. Vivian Meyer, the studio's Senior VP of Publicity, has informed us that the studio will continue exclusively backing the HD-DVD format in 2007 and expects to make a number of major HD-DVD release announcements at CES next month.

Regardless of what some people say, I am still crossing my fingers for some Spielberg.

Very cool.
I'm hoping for Jurassic Park.

I'd bite on Jurassic Park. Hell, I might even go for Jurassic Park 3. But Universal seriously needs to start putting out some of their classic monster movies ASAP.

I'm not sure I really want to see 4x3 content on HD-DVD.

Why not? Casablanca's already on HD DVD and by most accounts looks great.

I bet we will see scarface. With the new dvd that came out recently and the Hd version playing in broadcast, it seems like an easy one to knock out and would be a big seller.

Id like to see AT LEAST Scarface, Bourne Identity, and Meet the Fockers.

I HOPE to see Jurassic Park series, Back to the Future series and possibly some other Spielberg movies. Fingers crossed.

Those would be HUGE for HD-DVD.

Casablanca and Adventures of Robin Hood are easily two of the best HD discs available right now.

What does the aspect ratio have to do with HD DVD?

I'm hoping for Jaws, some Hitchcock, and Universal Monsters.

Jesus holy Christ, I retracted the comment. Frankly, I can't even tell you my motivation, so let's just pretend it never happened. Like Gigli.

Does anyone know why Denon/Marantz (D&M Holdings) or Onkyo would be members of the HD DVD promotion group? It would be kind of interesting if any of these had plans to market a player...

The group's purpose is:

The purposes of the Group are to (a) promote the HD DVD format established by the DVD Forum, (b) enhance the development of content and hardware made in compliance with the HD DVD format, and (c) establish and expand the market for such products. For such purposes, the Group shall conduct the following activities ("Purposes"):

Looks like the 360 sold about 42,000 HD-DVD drives according to the November NPD report.

Wow, very cool. The 360 add-on certainly has been a boost to the HDDVD format.

Then I guess the shills saying HD DVD has sold only 70,000 total are way off base? I find it hard to believe (assuming that 42,000 figure is accurate, and I have no doubt it is) that only 28,000 set-top units have been sold.

The 360 HD DVD is an incredible bargain, despite its shortcomings.

The number of 70,000 refers to only Toshiba's units. Until Microsoft released the numbers for the HD DVD add-on, those were the only numbers known.
