This is interesting, but also a bit scary. From video business...

"Batman Begins, anticipated for release on HD DVD by the end of May, is expected to be one of the first Warner HD DVD titles to carry extras distinct from its standard DVD version. "

Im hoping that it has ALL of the sd dvd special features (maybe without the comic book menus though) AND some more. Cant wait for this one!!

I think it will contain all of the 2-disc features, just like their launch HD titles did. Jarhead and Cinderella Man will both contain all features from their previous 2-disc dvd releases. I think Jarhead will also contain exlusive HD content.

It will include all the extras from the standard DVD as well as a few added quirks. The bits posted a picture of what appears to be a feature video commentary for the feature not on the DVD. I am also really really hoping Warner gives this one HD sound. With them sticking this on Phantom of the Opera I can't possibly conceive of them denying this to Batman Begins.

Well...not true. We're talking about the SPECIAL EDITION dvd as opposed to the standard DVD. People are hoping it will have all the extras from the SE.

Damn. The news of Goodfellas and Batman Begins is making me want to jump ship to HD-DVD.

Damn me and my patience on wanting to wait until what format wins.

I love what Digital Bits had to say about Warner's wave two releases:
The studio's first DVD/HD-DVD hybrid disc (officially called a "HD DVD and DVD Combo Format" disc in press release lingo) will be Rumor Has It on 5/9 (SRP $39.99 - day and date with the standard definition DVD-only release). In terms of catalog titles, GoodFellas and Swordfish will arrive on 5/2, while Training Day will follow on 5/9 with Rumor Has It (SRP on the catalog titles will be $28.99 each).

Say what? Seriously? Training Day? Swordfish? Why not toss in Battlefield: Earth and Catwoman? While GoodFellas is a nice surprise, and the others aren't bad films per se, one can only assume that titles like The Matrix and Batman Begins - the films that should really dazzle viewers in high-definition video and high-resolution audio - are being held back to allow for the inclusion of new and more complicated high-def bonus features. Nevertheless, I'm VERY surprised that Warner isn't being more aggressive in releasing at least a few of the kind of whiz-bang catalog films that early adopters really want to see on HD-DVD. It's puzzling and somewhat frustrating - not quite the format lunch we expected for HD-DVD anyway. After just having had to sit though Phantom of the Opera, I was hoping for a little better from Warner: Wave Two. Ah well... maybe Wave Three will impress. At least Universal has The Bourne Supremacy, U-571 and The Chronicles of Riddick on the way. Anyway, we've updated the High-Def Release List accordingly.

"StudioCanal ajoute qu'il prévoit d'ajouter du contenu interactif utilisant le iHD. Côté audio/vidéo, les films seront encodés au format VC-1 et utliseront une piste DTS HD Lossless."

translation? so all these discs will have DTS?

That's a quality list. Hopefully, most make their way over here especially Arizona Dream, which never got a US DVD release.

Well, if your like me you can just bullshit yourself into it. If you can afford it.

Say things like, $499 for not only HD, but also an upconverting player. If the format fails, at least I still have an upconverter as well as a DVD player.

It's all just excuses to buy, but they help.

You can also sell some of your unused DVD collection like I did. That's if you don't use them like me.

If you start to see the format way sway one way or the other, you can sell your player and get out early before it dives.

Once I see a path (which should be clearer in 6 months to a year), I plan on dumping one of the formats.

DIVX had signs and one of these formats will too.

Why? Warner will release them on Blu-ray as well.

Because he can buy an HD-DVD player for $500 and watch these movies in the next month or so? Warner will release them on Blu-ray too, if what they say is true, but when? Is it worth the additional cost? I'm sure it may be for some people, but we're all capable of making our own informed decisions here.

I have already sold my copy of Goodfellas. So Goodfellas and Batman Begins are must buys now. I even went ahead and grabbed Last Samurai because getting any HD discs from Netflix is seeming impossible now.

I wasn't planning to, but I went ahead and ordered Doom from amazon. UPS is delivering it today. I'll definitely be getting Goodfellas and Swordfish Tuesday. I hope amazon adds them in the next couple of days. Right now, you can't even pre-order them. You can only sign up to have them email you when it's available.

I would suspect Universal would want to make Inside Man a day & date HD title. I'm sure we could expect that one sometime in July or August.

And how are people going to make an informed decision if we don't, y'know, inform them?

For instance, have you noticed that the HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ doesn't even include a question as obvious to ask as "Which studios support each format"?

Well its only five times the price of an upconverter player that does the same thing. I am sure most bought it for HD-DVD not for upconverting there DVDs.

Well, your last statement is quite obvious, but the upconverting sd on this unit is better than any that I have owned and ive owned alot of them (Sammy 931, 841, 941, 755, Panny S97, Momitsu V880DX, Denon 1910 and the Oppo player).

At least for my ISF calibrated 61in Sammy DLP tv, it looks better than those. Very detailed picture with absolutely no macroblocking.

So, I was able to sell my Oppo for $150 and have just one player for all DVDs. Thats a big plus to me.

I wasnt expecting that the upconversion will really be that quality. I was pleasantly surprised.

Now, I have room for a BD player in my entertainment center also.

Also, as for the "5 times" the cost, I paid $440 for mine, plus $15 in reward zone points, plus $25 Toshiba certificate for a free movie. Most GOOD upscaling players are around $150-200 and thats for the lower end ones.

It was $200 cheaper than my upconverting player and it does a better job of upconverting than most of those $100 players. If someone was happy with the quality of a $100 DVD player why would they upgrade to HD anyway?

I have a new demo disc. Out of the 6 released, Doom, imo, definitely has the best combo of picture and sound. Early in the movie, where they are flying over the city, that shot just looked incredible. The movie isn't great, but I do like more after the second viewing. This is a good disc to show off your new HD-DVD player, at least until Batman Begins and King Kong make their debut.

You could give it super-ultra-mega definition and I would still not let that awful movie demo my system. Come on making a movie based on a shooter was easy. All you have to do is have plenty of shooting monsters and the movie couldn't even give you that. A movie has problems when the best scene in the movie is essentially just a port of a scene from the game.
