I'll be picking up a few of those. I hope King Kong gets announced soon.

Thanks for the update, Grubert. Here's hoping that Land of the Dead is the unrated version.

I also hope Red Dragon will contain all of the "Director's Edition" dvd features.

The release of Traffic, Dazed and Confused and Fear and Loathing got me thinking about the pricing applied by the Criterion Collection:

If someone has an HD DVD player and $30 to spend, will he/she rather buy the Criterion (SD, lots of extras) or the HD DVD (high-def, fewer extras)?

DVDActive has day to date (with standard DVD) street dates for

- RV (Aug. 15th) (Blu-Ray)

- Silent Hill (Aug. 22nd) (Blu-Ray)

That's a good question. I personally would pick up the HD DVD version because I'm more interested in the quality of the presentation than extras. I'm not sure how most people would respond.

What if they already had the criterion? huh? HuH?

OK ok fine...i see what you're getting at.
I think for most people, Criterion is a bunch of high-quality extras. If one doesn't care much about that, they would probably get the HD version. I'm debating what to do since I don't really want to pick up any HD's that I can't completely replace the SD's with.

Yeah, I just got Dazed and Confused Criterion during the DDD 20% off sale. I think I'll still get the HD version.

Is Universal picking titles at random to be combo discs? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Maybe it is simply to test the market to see if the discs are more/less popular than the non-combo discs.

well since I already have the Criterion versions of those three, I'll get the HD version to replace the SD Criterion, but keep the Criterion for the extras.

real excited about Fear & Loathing.

I bet you anything, Universal won't have the DTS soundtrack that is on the Criterion edition of 'Fear and Loathing'

I was wondering about that after I made that post. I'm hoping the DD+ will be as good.

No, but it'll have Dolby TrueHD.

Must have missed this.

I didn't realize it was possible for them to go through a list and just pick shit that I'd never buy...but...they have.

Yeah that one is on my list. Don't know if I will want to double dip on Fear and Loathing or Traffic though I can definitely see those movies looking excellent in HD.

I might bite on Traffic, but after dropping good coin on the Criterion, it will be difficult to swallow.

I suppose I understand the logic - if they had "killer app" titles available, people would start clamoring even more for players that are already in short supply.

That said, bring on Jurassic Park!

This could be a sign that they're going to release some of the big titles just before Sony's BD player launches.
