Exactly.

you're going to deter people from even checking it out for themselves. do you know how many will rely on the internet for their "information?"

Because, if nothing else, they show the color accuracy of the HD image. If an interested party reads the thread they will see that no one is saying this represents HD-DVD accurately.

The enthusiasm of the EAs over at the File should be the deciding factor for new buyers, not the screenshots.

If your entire purpose was to show color accuracy, then you should at least state that at the top of your thread, else you are just misleading people.

I had no intentions and if people are mislead, it’s because they aren’t paying attention. It was just something we were doing to give an “idea” of the format. I’ve never seen a screenshot taken with a camera that adequately represents HD or SD — and we all know that.

Like I said before, if you read through the thread, you’ll clearly see that no one is stating that these pics show the absolute detail of HD-DVD.

People like the screenshots and we’ve had several people (one today actually) say they can’t wait to buy a HD player based (partially) on the shots.

Sorry but I think they're misleading and as someone who's had a player for a couple of months, I don't think they give an "idea" of the format at all.

And I'd say, judging from the reactions I've read, they're doing more harm than good.

Maybe for someone who's been staring at HD for months the pics are an injustice, but for the average schmo like myself who hasn't seen a heck of a lot - the pics look pretty awesome to me.

Thanks for the pics!

I figure we can keep this thread to show differences for all movies released in HD form so that people can make decisions on whether the HD version is that much better than the SD version.
I keep leaning towards getting HD but I am still not completely sold especially after going to best buy, but after I saw some of the pictures it made me more of a believer.

I wish there was a better way to show screenshot comparisons though.

You mean the Toshiba laptop? It must be able to because I remember reading about the "copy protection hole" which allowed the print screen button to work... They were going to disable it in a future Windows update.

Take the challenge. Buy an HD-A1 (or HD-XA1) and take it home. You have 30 days to return it to BB for a full refund. Warning: you won't be able to .

Exactly. I haven't heard of anyone on these (or other) boards who bought one over the last few months and returned it. It's always best to see it on your system. You know what looks best and what will impress you.
You should have gone this weekend. I could've given you my 10% coupon for Best Buy.

Maybe if I can get my hands on one of those 30% coupons I might do it.

A couple of people have had it work on other stuff. Heck it's worth a shot.

It does work on DVDs and I'm sure HD-DVDs as well.

20% off still isn't better than a Target price and if you price-match, they won't let you use a coupon.

I am just going to try and see if it works on the A1, if it does then that's a 350+tax player.

couldn't one just play one of those QT HD trailers and take a screenshot and then do the same with the standard resolution one, and then throw them both up for comparison?

Nope. Those aren't encoded with VC1. They're h264. Although they do look great, they do have certain problems like color banding and some macro-blocking.

I mean, I suppose one could but that still wouldn't show the difference between HD DVD and SD DVD.

Don't have HD-DVD yet but mad to get into it...

Been watching this thread for comparison images and decided to do a test with my regular dvd copy of T2 (the Ultimate Edition) and a download of the WMV HD trailer for the T2 Extreme Edition.

Here's a screenshot from the T2 dvd, played through Power DVD and run at full screen:

Now here's the same frame (or as close as I could get) from the WMV HD trailer:

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions...

p.s.

I have a Dell 24" LCD so these are native 1920x1080 grabs

Here's another comparison, this time with a section of the screen cropped out (but not resized - both just sections of full 1920x1080 screenshots)

That's a MUCH better comparison than the previous one; it shows a clear difference, while the other didn't show much of anything.
