The Shining looks very good except for some minor print damage and dirt specks. It had a light amount of grain and the detail and clarity were terrific. My biggest complaint would be the dirt specks, which there seemed to be many. If the HD DVD release does use this transfer, I wouldn't hesitate on picking it up.

So I assume this was in WS? (Which I prefer The Shining in btw as that's how I saw it in the theaters, don't want to start up that debate all over again..)

Yes, it was in 1.78:1 ratio.

I saw it and agree with this assessment. And given the movie is more than 25 years old, the grain/dirt is really no big deal. With all this Kubrick being the HD channel rotations (Shining, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket) it's going to be hard to buy new DVD SEs of these. The PQ can only suffer in comparison.

I just finished the 4th book. Let me klnow if you want to know more.
Spoiler:
That's a bit of a simplification. The first monolith is there to cultivate intelligence. It actually affects the apes minds slightly so that they being using tools and such. The second monolith on the moon was left by the alien civilization as a marker. When it's uncovered by humans, meaning that they've advanced enough to travel through space, it sends a signal to the third monolith oribiting Jupiter. That's what the ringing noise was, was the radio signal from the 2nd monolith messing with the space suit's own radios. Now the third monolith is a portal, definitely in space but also possibly in time. Its purpose is least clear, but it seems to accend Rob Bowman into a higher state of being and sends him back to Earth.

HDNet Movies is an amazing channel and I think I get more enjoyment from it than I do HBO, Starz or Showtime. Where else can you find 2001, The Shining, The Dead Pool, Pale Rider, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Rosemary's Baby, Monty Python's Meaning of Life, The Pit and the Pendulum, Empire of the Sun, Fistful of Dollars and Jeremiah Johnson in OAR HD? Those are just some of the recent premieres and worth changing providers for in my opinion.

I'm half way through 'A Clockwork Orange' I'll give my thoughts on it tomorrow. So far, I've seen a couple of flaws, but on the whole pretty impressive.
