2001: A Space Odyssey on HDNet
 

Just in case you didn't know, this premiered on HDNet this weekend.

It looked great, definitely better than my up-converted DVD.

However, I did see more edge enhancement than I thought there should be, especially in the "Dawn of Man" section. And some of the contrast/brightness could have been better.

For the most part, though, it was quite an experience.

Yes, i just watched it for the first time and the quality was simply amazing for being such an older film. I beleive its a 70mm print, which is largely why its so amazingly clean.

Warners commissioned three new 70mm prints a few years ago, and when I saw them they were spotless, so I imagine this was what they used.

Anyone seen THE SHINING on an HD channel?

A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket have made rotations on HDNET and INHD, but I'm not aware of The Shining. I'd expect it to look about comparable to those other two (or the FMJ HD DVD), which is somewhere below what 2001 looks like.

...although that'll change next month with The Shining making its HD debut (as far as I know) on HDNet Movies.

2001 is on now. It looks incredible. Is WB planning on debuting this on HD DVD when the 2-disc dvd SEs of the others are released in September?

That would be fantastic if they released all of them on HD DVD at the same time, however I have my doubts. Mainly due to the fact that they already released Full Metal Jacket on HD DVD. Hopefully at the very least this will just mean they are only going to release certain ones on HD DVD for now. I can't see them doing a double dip already with FMJ, but I guess anything is possible.

If they release them all at once, and make an HD-DVD box set, then they'll just package the current release of FMJ along with it. However, I highly doubt an HD-DVD box set will have Dr. Strangelove.

By the way, HDNet's series Higher Definition will have newly recorded interviews (also in high-def, naturally) with Gary Lockwood and Keir Dullea next Tuesday.

I think I'm going to have to write to Comcast and demand they start carrying HDNet.

Agreed! I'll join U. The INHD channels are kinda lame and rarely are the films OAR.

Last night Akira Kurosawa's film Dreams was on INHD. The sad thing is, it almost doesn't matter if Comcast carries HDNet or not, because none of my cable HD channels look nearly as good as HD-DVD. I've become completely spoiled now.

Wow! Our comcast HD here in berkeley is pretty good. WAY better than my gf's Uncles' DirecTV.. Can't wait to get my player!

I finally got around to watching both 2001 and 2010 on HDNet. Wow! Absolutely incredible! I saw 2001 in the theater back in the 60's and it looked pretty much like it did here. Very vivid and detailed. What an absolute treat! I hope both of these movies come out on HD-DVD.

Dog Day Afternoon was on INHD last night. It looked damn good. I'd like to see an HD DVD of that, please.

Taxi Driver was on last night...or the night before, it looked very good on HDNet.

I dvr'd The Time Machine this morning.

what surprised me was how tactile looking the HiDef broadcast looked - the moonscapes, the space ships had such clarity that one almost wanted to reach toward the screen and touch it.

Question about the actual movie -

I believe most of the movies that are on HD will probably be the first ones that end up as HD-DVD/Blu-Ray titles. I've seen a lot of titles like this.

Spoiler According to the books. - I just finished the 4th book. Let me klnow if you want to know more.

This may require a separate thread in a different forum, but I would say do not look to the books for explanation of what happened in the movie. Kubrick and Clarke worked on the script for the film together, then Clarke went off to write the book while Kubrick shot the movie. Clarke put in a lot of stuff in the book that was clearly not in the movie (especially the fate of the Starchild), a lot of which completely strips the film of its mystique. Kubrick purposely left a lot of the film ambiguous, and the book does everything it can to lay everything bare.

I just got HDnet and a bunch of other HD channels today. I'm glad HDnet repeats often because I see 2001, The Shining and A Clockwork Orange are all going to be one there this week. I can't wait to see 2001 in HD.
