I wouldn't mind ordering a couple more titles from Bestprices, but I have to get my complete order first. I placed an order for two titles on October 5th that shipped on the 6th. It arrived Friday (the 20th), but one of the discs was missing. I emailed them but I haven't yet gotten a response.

How long does BestPrices typically take to ship pre-orders? I made use of the Google checkout deal and ordered the Mission:Impossible 3-Pack last night. I know there are people on AVS who have already received their copy, but I got an email from BestPrices about an hour ago, indicating that it hadn't yet been released, and that it'd automatically ship when it became "available". I guess I'm wondering how it is these other people got a hold of it before it's released. Was it a screw-up on BestPrices' part, or what? Thoughts?

I was hoping that by springing for the 2-day shipping, that it would place a higher priority on my order. I guess not.

I wonder if the MI boxset will go on backorder with bestprices.com? it appears alot of people bought it through them for the 50.00 price.

If other people have already gotten their copy, then that, to me, indicates they have some in stock. The whole purpose of pre-ordering, as I see it, is so one can stake his/her claim. They should disable pre-ordering if they feel they don't have enough to meet demand. Amazon is realizing this too late, and it's obviously caused problems for them; they're unable to fill the pre-orders, regardless of when said pre-orders were made. That's my primary reason for going with BestPrices -- I didn't want to risk another mishap, especially since the 3-Pack is a popular item.

Has anybody received HD offers in their Amazon gold box? I've been making an effort to browse the titles they have on the site, in the hope that they'll show up in the GB.

The only ones I've seen are Apollo 13, Unforgiven, and Goodfellas. They show up very infrequently, but when they do it's an extra $1 off.

Good to know that you're getting some. I'll keep browsing titles in the hope that they'll show up someday for me.

I get The Last Samurai at least once or twice a week for $1 off. Since I preorder anything I want from them within hours of it being put on the site, I don't think the gold box will do me much good for HD DVDs.

I order HD DVD's from Amazon all of the time, but have never seen one in my gold box. Never have ordered a Blu Ray from Amazon, but I used to get Blu Ray's in my goldbox all the time (haven't seen them for about a month now).

The funny thing is, they offer me the regular DVD's in my Goldbox of the HD DVD's I already bought from them.

A couple of days ago they offered me a VHS and it had the message about it being so popular that they just ran out

Goldbox seems to be pretty worthless now.

Google Checkout & DVD Empire FYI: I noticed that Google Checkout doesn't work for pre-orders which are more than 30 days in the future. For items with a release date less than 30 days, Google Checkout works. I confirmed this using DVD Empire's chat:

you: I noticed that Google Checkout doesn't work for pre-orders which are more than 30 days in the future.
you: is that correct?
Bob: That's true. On order items won't work either.
you: However it does work for items that are pre-orders, but with a release date < 30 days
Bob: Yes. That's correct.

Well, the HD browsing (on Amazon) seems to help. I just got my first gold box offer for an HD DVD (Unforgiven $18.95). That's an extra buck off.

BestPrices raised their shipping costs, but I didn't notice until after I made the purchase Time to cancel.

It depends with them. Some titles are more expensive to ship using Google Checkout than others. Strange.

For those interested, you can pre-order "Miami Vice" on HD-DVD at best prices for under $24 shipped. For a $39.99 Universal special, this is a blind-buy for me, but I couldn't resist the price. Now, if they'd just list Superman Returns....

Thanks for that information. I picked up a couple of near-term pre-orders (Under Siege and Excaliber) from DVD Empire for $16.57 each. And I'll be looking for the Superman titles to be available via Google checkout on October 29.

They raised their prices after you had already made the purchase? I havn't had that happen before.

With Bestprices the shipping charges usually suck when you preorder two items. They will count it as "going out in two shipments" and charge you $10 for shipping.

I placed 2 orders with bestpices.com and the shipping was as follows(cheapy shipping both times):

2 HD-DVDs(in stock) - 3.97
1 HD-DVD(MI boxset preorder) - 2.98

I was suprised that 2 seperate dvds had a higher shipping than a 4 disc boxset but the shipping didn't seem too bad for me either way.

Thats about right for standard shipping from them. Try and do a faux checkout with two titles being released next month and the shipping should be for two packages.

I tried to do shipping for two titles next month. It went to $7 shipping. Bullshit. Their shipping prices kill it.
