And? Has anyone _officially_ said anything? Just because it is posted on AVS doesn't make it true.

I'm wondering if the Linux box A1 and XA1 were just a temporary fix until Toshiba can start mass producing these things with custom components. I won't be surprised if Toshiba announces another line of players soon to replace the A1 and XA1. I bet they have much faster load times and 1080p. I have a feeling the A1 and XA1 won't be the players Toshiba uses for their real launch in September.

Supermallet 06-21-06 01:08 AM

If that happens and the A1 price drops, then I will gladly pick one up. :)

From EETimes.com:

Toshiba plans to introduce a new player model before the year-end sales season to boost the sales.

Their fiscal year ends in March, but "year-end sales season" refers to the calendar year.

Ah yes. You are correct. Sorry.

But does that mean Japan-only? Or will it be here too? That's pretty damn impressive. HD DVD will be on its second gen and BD will be on its first. ;)

I'd love to pick me up one of those recorders. Wonder if Bill Hunt will report on that. ;)

Adam Tyner 06-23-06 09:15 AM

Apparently the new player is really more of a "1.5" than a "2.0", but since it's a similar architecture and Toshiba has confirmed that this new player will be firmware-upgradable to handle 5.1 TrueHD decoding, that should bode well for the HD-A1 being able to do the same.

Mr. Cinema 06-23-06 09:45 AM

Are the chances high that the 2nd gen Toshiba will output 1080p?

As much as I love my HD-A1, I'll likely get this one too. And the 360 add-on. I can't stop...never hurts to have backups.

RockStrongo 06-23-06 10:02 AM

I have noticed lately that my A1 does not play some of my DVD+Rs very well. This is on Verbatim discs created with a plextor dvd-writer on 1X writing!!

They skip around and sometimes never load. So, I just throw them in my 360 and they play fine....the pq is just lacking. Bleh.

I hope a future firmware update will fix this.

Are they SL or DL?

But that doesn't matter because it will still be saddled with HDMI 1.1 and only HDMI 1.3 will be able to handle TrueHD and the other audio formats. Personally I'm fine with this because I don't plan on buying a new reciever for awhile. I've been pretty happy with regular DTS so I'm sure I'll be quite happy with DD+.

This is just a GUESS, but I'll say YES, seeing as though the Tosh HD-DVD burner has been announced for Japan (there is a new thread here somewhere), and has 1080p output.

...but it can decode the TrueHD to PCM and pass that to the receiver.

Fettastic 06-23-06 10:24 AM

Does anyone know why the HD-A1 can only output 1080i? I saw the HD DVD demonstration when they came through a couple weeks before it debuted and I was sort of surprised the guys hosting it seemd out of the loop. Their response was that HDMI was incapable of 1080p at the time. But the Samsung has the same HDMI port and it handles 1080p fine.

Do you know for sure this will happen? If so, cool!

If it can do that, is it possible it could then be upgraded to 1080p at some point?

SL...I actually have less of a problem now with my DL discs once I changed the booktype.

Ive had 2 movies this week skip every few seconds....they play fine in my 360.

Here's my question. What are the discs? are they copies of properly authored stuff? or are they stuff you've authored yourself?

It will be a part of the firmware upgrade 1.4 that will supposedly happen next week.

1080p is being debated via firmware. I don't think we've gotten a direct answer.

No comment. ;)

What purplexes me, is just that they play fine on my 360 and my brothers Oppo....im just hoping that its something they fix via firmware.

No no...you HAVE TO. I have a thread about this over at AVS because I'm having a lot of problems with one particular type of disc and it seems like I'm the only one that's having it. Can you PM or even email me? I need someone to help back me up.
