well think about how it's being transported over cable. I also look at the sizes of these movies (since I've started downloading HD movies) and they're quite small. Revenge of the Sith is only about 11gb. Think about that in terms of BD or even HD DVD.

Even if the codec wasn't an issue, there is an advantage in the bitrate that the discs can deliver, plus the compression can be optimized rather than being done on the fly.

I also see a very noticeable difference between cable HD and HD DVD. However, HDnet's presentation of 2001 looked absolutely stunning. The HD DVD of that, whenever it arrives, should be even better.

Don't get me wrong. Some HDTV stuff looks fantastic. INHD seems to be one of the better ones but there's are many HDTV programs, specials, and series that don't look very good. There is no apples-to-apples comparison I can make right now but I know the darker scenes (for example, in Serenity and The Rundown) look better than darker scenes in TV shows. Not apples to apples.
(This is for cable HDTV, not over the air).

I don't know if someone posted this article from projector central yet:
Blu-Ray: Can It Survive?
(a bit of an extreme title choice)
Interesting indeed.

So why all the confusion? If live video is originally captured with an HD video camera in 1080p, that is a much higher resolution than capturing in 1080i. The reason is that when an HD camera captures in 1080i, it is scanning 540 odd lines at one moment in time, and the 540 even lines at a subsequent moment in time. So in motion sequences, vertical resolution drops to 540 lines rather than 1080. Furthermore, interlaced capture produces motion offsets in the reassembled frame, resulting in the interlacing artifacts that people don't like. That does not occur with either HD-DVD or Blu-ray 1080p film-sourced material since it is all progressively scanned from film frames that represent single moments in time. So this material can be transmitted from the player to the display via 1080i without introducing interlacing artifacts.

That one's pretty funny. The first page is full of posts saying "Toshiba is doomed! No one will buy a player!"

Over on AVS someone is comparing Training Day BD to the HD DVD and he says he saw no differences. So, for something that looks as good as HD DVD, you only have to pay twice the price (and still no DolbyTruHD for them)!

This story was too good not to re-post here.
Yep my local BB hasn't had one in stock for over a month longer than about 4 hours. I am friends with the manager and asked him about them. He said that they were getting in about 5 a week (I only live in a town of about 45K folks) and they were selling out the same day they would get them in. They have had the same 3 BD players sitting there for 3 weeks now (I marked the boxes and teh same 3 are still sitting there) He said they had sold one and it was returned about 5 hours later.

Returned 5 hours later.
Here's something I put together: I will update periodically. Note the chart is on a logarithmic scale.

The software data is a bit more of a pain in the ass to track so I don't do it as often. Note I put in the Oppo DVD player as sort of a comparison to what a popular DVD player might be selling for. (Except for software) I don't update today's numbers until the day after as the sales data right now is a projection through the end of the day.

I think this chart shows the all important value of a buck, something Sony heads have been downplaying for a long, long time, even some that are HD-DVD converts.
Look at the poorer sales for the more expensive of the HD players. People know that there is a less expensive yet essentially the same model out there. It also looks like people are voting with their wallets to drop a little extra money on a true HD deck over the Oppo.
Good stuff.

Wow, that pretty much confirms the Mpeg2 issues. Also one thing the Microsoft guys talked about was how slow Java was. Could the slow menus be related or is this another Blu-ray issue?
