Just got my RCA HD-DVD Player. So far, so good. I'm living with component video because (A)I thought my Samsumg TV had HDMI, but it's just DVI and (2) HDMI - DVI converters start at $40 and roll up to $100, so that aint happening.
I thought it would upconvert DVD's to 720p but it says it can only show them at 480p.
Other than that, I like it. I did a A/B with Constantine and the difference is dramatic.

Monoprice carries good quality cables for cheap prices.
Also, you can only upconvert SD DVD's through the HDMI/DVI interface.

Toshiba has not made any announcement about any new HD DVD products. As of this moment, they are going to announce a replacement for the HD-A1 at the Denver CEDIA show. The new model # is the HD-A2 and maintains the $499. MAP. The HD-A2 will be trimmer and a little faster. Delivery is scheduled for sometime in October at the EARLIEST, assuming all goes well with BETA and production.
The HD-XA1 will become even scarcer as Toshiba is concentrating of the production of the HD-A2. However, the HD-XA2 is slated for sometime by the end of Q1-07.

I am giddy, giddy, giddy!! A1 is installed...
But I am waiting on the firmware update before I watch my first disc. The anticipation is killing me. I hope I am not building it way up for nothing. First disc will be Phantom of the Opera in Dolby TruHD 5.1. Woohoo!!!

Well, that was really nice.
If only my F***ING disc from Netflix had not been scratched!!!
The sound was unreal and the video was incredible. Unfortunately, about 4 times during the movie things either dropped out or froze up. In fact, we could not finish the movie because the very end froze and sat for about 30 seconds and then I just turned it off in disgust.
I really hope my other Netflix discs are not so baddly damaged. I, of course, am assuming that it was the disc. I visually inspected the disc before playing it and there were definate scratches.
Oh well. The Perfect Storm is next on my list. Here hoping for a better experience.

man this is awesome!
I decided to take the HD-DVD plunge a month or so ago. I had a Denon 2910 that was worth about $400 on Audiogon, so I figured I would sell it and buy the Toshiba HD-DVD player using the Continental deal for no money out of pocket. I got the HD-DVD player last week and my first disc (Serenity) came today. DAMN. This thing kicks ass. It is a great DVD player (it looks as good as the 2910 on my Samsung DLP) and HD is simply unreal! And the sound! I now understand what you guys have been talking about for months.

I am sure that I will buy a couple discs in the future. I was relying on Netflix to soften that blow. I reported the disc as scratched so hopefully they will take it out of rotation.

Hehehe, man I can't wait. I cancelled my order with Amazon and went with Vann's since they had them in stock and were the same price. Seeing this type of post make's it hard to wait.
I'll be going HDMI through my Onkyo SR803 to a 50" Hitachi LCD. I can't wait to see it and hear my Infinity Primus/Velodyne setup stretch it's legs.

I just updated my Netflix queue to add a bunch of HD-DVDs. Hell yeah. To all the enthusiastic HD-DVD supporters on DVDtalk - thanks for convincing me that sitting on the fence was tom-foolery!

Welcome to the club, I felt roughly the same way a month ago. I am loving the hell out of mine. I can't believe I waited as long as I did. You jumped from an awful good player to the Toshiba, I jumped from the Toshiba SD-5109 (Second or third generation DVD player - one of the early progressive scan models with and MSRP of $1500). I mean in its day it was pretty damn good, but nothing compared to today's units so the jump to the HD-A1 was unreal. It is really amazing at how cheap you can get one of these machines, its like picking up a Viper at Neon prices. It was cheaper - by far - than my first DVD player.

I'll add to the choir after less than a week with my new HD A-1 I am having a blast. I have this forum to thank for knocking me of the fence with the AVS power buy.
I have already rejoined Netflix and filled my Queue with HD-DVD titles that I don't plan to buy and just placed another DDD order for The Searchers, Van Helsing, Chronicles of Riddick and Constantine. I used overnight delivery for the first time becuase I just can't stand to wait for this kind of fun.
One thing that's really bugging me is being limited to component and not getting the SD upconversion. Ironically I think they are forcing me to research burning my SD movies to DVD-R so I can get the advantage of that feature. I imagine I'm not the only one and it's not quite the effect they were hoping for.
