How did you get it for $389?

Moved the update about the two new Warner titles to the release date thread. (Thanks for the heads-up about those titles, by the way!)

You realize, of course, that claiming the price is lower because you paid with gift certificates is just plain silly? The price is $499, that is what you paid, you just paid some of it with something other than cash.

True, but sales and discount coupons are valid in regards to the PS3. Because as a norm, gaming consoles are exlcuded.

It may be silly...but it's true. I still got it for $300.
People can talk about it being an investment but there are definitely ways of getting it much cheaper.

You can get it from any # of retailers who are selling it below $500.
Subtract the rebate from Toshiba.
There was a $25 gift card if you buy it this week and buy 3 movies.
You get RZ points if you're a member and you buy it from BB.
You can USE RZ points if you're a member and buy it from BB.
You can wait for the DDD sale and get it for probably around $400 shipped, if not less.

Is that all silly? Don't be bitter, sweetie. You can have big toys too. *smootch*

Just watched my first HD-DVD all the way through.

Jarhead
Zero problems. No sync issues. No stopping. Nothing.

Visually...it looked fantastic. Jarhead isn't really a show-y movie.
But the audio. WOW. Seriously. WOW.

No, it's not true. You paid over $500 with the warranty and tax, using certificates and $300 cash. If you had walked in there to buy yet another DVDR or a new laptop, you would have gotten the same benefit from the certificates and paid an amount of cash for those items. Next time you go to BB, you'll have to pay full price for something since you used up the certs. It always costs what it costs, until they actually reduce the price. Once BB says it will cost you $300, then it will be $300.

This is pretty basic stuff. It's called opportunity cost in some circles.

You were claiming that you got a discount. Other than a little sale, you didn't, you just paid a different way that no one else can take advantage of. So telling people they can get it for such a low cash outlay is incorrect.

And bud, my toys are doing just fine. I could've bought 3 A1s for what I just spent on my system this weekend. (although I probably need to drop another $300 to finish) I needed an audio jukebox next. And that product was mature enough to be worthwhile. That's how I play my opportunity cost. My HTS2000 is no longer adequate, again. I gotta figure something out. Nobody makes one bigger, so I need 2.

Just got back from BB. They had the measly two new releases this week. They also had zero players.

Is it just me or should they already have more releases out?

Are you talking about Best Buy having more HD releases or that the studios should have had more out by now?

My BB also were putting out the 2 new Warner discs. Too bad they're selling those for $25. I'll wait until Amazon or Walmart gets them in stock, they'll be $20.

Seems like Warners is 2 per week. Universal is releasing 4 next week: Bourne Supremacy, U-571, Van Helsing, and Chronicles of Riddick.

Paramount is the one pissing me off. They're just kinda asleep.

I think we'll see more product once Blu-Ray is out. Possibly when Batman Begins, Harry Potter 4, and King Kong are released is when we start seeing more titles.

Wasn't Paramount also a slow one out of the gate when DVD debuted?

They were slow to join the DVD party, and they were also very slow to grudgingly convert to anamorphic widescreen transfers of much of their catalog.

The S&V review is the most accurate one I've read so far, at least in terms of my own experience with the XA-1. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've had ZERO glitches/freezes/dropouts/hiccups, and I've watched more than 20 discs on it so far.

The only drawback is, like that reviewer states, it does spoil you a little. I watched the HD-DVD of Unforgiven last night (*amazing* transfer; I had forgotten what a fantastic movie that is) then threw on Match Point, but I was so distracted by the difference in picture quality that I decided to wait and watch it another night.

Other than that, I'm more than satisfied. I had hung onto the box the player comes in just in case I was struck with buyers remorse, but I happily chucked it out over the weekend. This baby is here to stay.

Now gimme more HD discs! Paramount, this means you. I want The Godfather!

I don't know about you, but being spoiled has never left me unsatisfied, even a little bit. And this kind of spoiled only makes me want more. Like you said, MORE HD DISCS, PLEASE!!

New firmware is out for the Toshiba. Supposedly improves several things including drive time. Only out for Japan right now. We should have it soon.

Also got this from AVSforum:

I called Toshiba and they are very interested in hearing from you regarding issues with their HD players. They want to get it right. They have set up a special department to deal with issues reported with their players. Please call them at
1-800-319-6684 and tell them you have a HD player. The will put you through to the people dealing with reported issues. The more requests the better it will be for them to get it right. They are working on firmware updates and this is a very important product launch for them. I was also told that several of their people are AVS Fourm members and that they are montoring the fourm.

I actually took my player back to Best Buy the other night. My 30 day return period ran out on Thursday, and I've been having trouble with discs (particulary Universal titles) freezing and stuttering and locking up my player to the point where I would have to pull the plug. I figured I better take it back in case the firmware upgrade doesn't address this issue.

I'm getting another one next week from a dealer on AVS, because I loved the player when it worked. I'm hoping a newer build date will alleviate the problems with the disc lockups.
