I really think that this format war is going to distract from the crucial education that has to occur at retail. I think most people who don't focus on this stuff (DVD, HD, etc.) are going to ignore it.

I agree with the article too. Much of us who post here are relatively informed on the subject, but we represent a very small minority of the population. The vast majority have no clue about what will be happening in the next few years, or why, or what it means to them. Boy, people think they are confused now.
Even without the high def disc war, things would have been bad enough, but now it will be even worse. You're right, many will ignore the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray issue, but if the 2009 deadline goes through for the end of analog television, they won't be able to ignore that. And there will be a lot of pissed people out there.
