Lion's Gate to roll out 10 Blu-Ray titles in summer - $24.98 MSRP
From Home Media Retailing:
Wow, that's extremely competitive with DVD. I'll update this thread (unless someone beats me to the punch) with those 10 titles next week.
The Santa Monica, Calif.-based mini-major said it would announce as early as next week 10 titles to be released this summer in the Blu-ray Disc format at $24.98 per title.

Is it possible that with two competing formats that we might see highly competitive prices on alot of movies (not all)??
Sort of like establishing dominance with low prices, then once they are the dominant format, back off on the "deals" to increase their margins.

If it's the same list as at CES:
The Devil's Rejects
Dune (mini-series)
Lord of War
The Punisher
Rambo: First Blood
Reservoir Dogs
Saw
See No Evil
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Total Recall

buyer beware. Lion's gate is now creating full screen versions of widescreen films for widescreen TVs. By that I mean that they are cropping 2:35 and 1:85 ratio films to 'fill up' widescreen TVs that are 1:78 ratio. not as bad as 4:3 full screen, but still the same concept.
So with High Def DVD, Full Screen will STILL mean 'no black bars!".. ugh.
If this is the trend, then I will only get high def DVDs that keep the OAR.

The British DVD is 2.35:1 and the American one is 1.78:1.
I am officially worried.

Although, I agree. It's definitely too early to call this a pattern...

My concern is that my local HD Cable stations also did the same thing.. (not sure which - i have since cancelled cable). I thought this strange - that all the HD channels (including movies) i saw were magically 1:78..so it's not just Lion's gate.
Yes - it's premature to say ANYTHING about blue-ray, red-ray, or you-can-call-me-anything-as-long-as-I-end-with-ray, but these incidents do concern me..
All I am saying is that we should be careful and just not assume something is released in high def that it will be OAR. (for those of us who care)

There is very little difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1. It's essentially irrelevent before you take into account things like television overscan.
And how many films are matted to exactly 1.85:1 in theaters, anyway? You're probably getting a better representation of OAR with DVD than you are sitting in a movie theater whether the disc is 1.85:1 or 1.78:1.
Though changing a 2.35:1 movie to 1.78:1 is a different matter.

Actually T2 is a Super35 film, and I always felt that the 2.35 version is framed a bit tight on the top of the frame, so an open matte version wouldn't look that bad, but certainly if I had a preference I would want the original theatrical ratio.
