Change YouTube embeds to match aspect ratio of the source?

Not sure if this is something Adam can fix with his beautiful magic, or if it require someone else...

It's a small, insignificant thing... but the YouTube auto-embed code that this site is using sets both the height and width to specific settings. So the "preview" (or thumbnail, whatever you want to call it) image can sometimes look cut-off. Like this:

(see how "VEVO" on the bottom left is cut-off partially?)

I think all you need to do is keep the Height tag, but remove the Width tag. That way, embeds will always be the same vertical height, but the preview still-image won't look cut-off.

Am I making any sense?

edit: I kind of picked a bad example, because this video is 4x3. But every 16x9 video does the same thing.

Thank you for that concentrated dose of 90s. "Vevo" looks OK to me, let's check this:

EDIT: Looks like it compresses the video to be 4:3, rather than crops.

Always glad to inject some '90s mega-hits into others' lives.

Yeah it looks like when you play the video, there's nothing wrong with the video itself, as it gets shrunk/expanded to fit in the embedded frame size by adding black bars to the sides or top/bottom, depending on the size of the original video.

I just mean the preview screen before you press play. This is what i see in both embeds above:

Spoiler:

The first V and part of the E is cut off.

Another, non-VEVO example:

(the preview shows "ands" "ree" and "oast") like this, but the video itself is fine once played:
Spoiler:

Here's what the uncropped preview image should look like:

Again, this is all fairly silly and inconsequential, but it's something I've noticed on this site, and this site alone. Another forum that uses YouTube auto-embeds manages to have the preview image uncropped, so I assume it has something to do with how the embeds HERE are forcing a certain height & width, whereas other sites only force the height.

Both previews look the same. I can see complete words.

Re: Change YouTube embeds to match aspect ratio of the source?

Well, damn. The plot thickens!

I tried multiple browsers. Here's what I got:

Firefox on PC - sides are cropped (ie: first V and part of E of Vevo are gone)
Chrome on PC - sides are cropped
Edge on PC (Chromium version) - sides are cropped
Edge on PC (old version) - sides are NOT cropped at all.

Edge on iPhone (mobile view) - sides are cropped, but not as much (ie: only part of the first V of Vevo)
Brave on iPhone (mobile view) - sides are cropped, but not as much
Brave on iPhone (desktop view) - sides are cropped
Chrome on iPhone (mobile view) - sides are cropped, but not as much (ie: only part of the first V of Vevo)
Chrome on iPhone (mobile view, landscape mode) - sides are barely cropped!

edit: I went back and resized my PC browser windows and could get more of the preview/thumbnail image to appear on the ones where it's cropped, but never enough to show the entire preview/thumbnail screen.

So... it seems to be somehow linked to browser type/size/orientation, and it's a percentage of the total width. Probably too complicated to fix at this point...

Re: Change YouTube embeds to match aspect ratio of the source?

Okay, resizing my browser window DEFINITELY changes the way the YouTube embeds look.

Here are two full-size captures. The first is at a fairly large width, and shows how the preview/thumbnail is cut off.

The second is where I shrunk the window, horizontally, to the first point where the preview/thumbnail changes to a full, normal, view (after refreshing the page)

Both are spoilerized due to size.

Spoiler:

1863 pixels wide

1712 pixels wide

again, probably not something worth bothering with... but if there's an easy fix/change, this anal-retentive nerd would be thankful.
