Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
I don't know if this is related to the unread posts thing, but anyone remember a loooonnnnggg time ago, the forum used to get really really slow, then crash. Something along the lines of the temp directory in the DB got filled. And as a fix for that, they automated something to clear that out, and as a result of that if you ran a search (New Posts, etc) the url would only last so long before it turned into a page not found.
Every time you do a search, you get a searchid=, so if you had 10 pages of results you would only get so far before the searchid expired and then everything would be marked read. It would seem to me, since the forum is not as busy as it once was, this could be adjusted (assuming it is still activated somewhere). I very rarely have over 2 pages of results anymore, unless I'm not around for awhile. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Try editing wikiposts now.
Still working on the wikipost content "randomizing", but please send me all examples, either in this thread or through PM. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
I spoke with tech and I think I fixed unread thread marking. They did say it will take a couple of days to kind of "clear out" all the cookies from before.

I thought we’ve always used imagehosting sites. http://i63.tinypic.com/fnr90k.jpg I actually came to mention the unread post time warp thing, but it seems to have been addressed already. |

I can edit my wiki now, so that's good, and as others have said, the last couple weeks worth of posts have all been marked unread
|
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Yeah I'm also experiencing the forum glitch with threads going back to 2 weeks being marked as Unread.
|
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
So all the old wikis are lost forever I guess?

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Same here. On safari.
|
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Same. 19 pages of "New Posts".
Also, I like how New Posts now actually shows new posts and not just a list of posts from a time period. For example, if I reply to a thread and hit New Posts again, that thread will not show at all. Before it would still show and just not be bold text. |

If I haven't read them, I don't want them marked as read, unless I specifically choose to 'Mark Forums Read' under the quick links menu. Last night I read all the threads I was interested in, then I marked the forums read. This morning I only see bolding on threads with new content. Yes, I had the initial issue of the older threads showing as unread, but I expect that's a one-off to do with the configuration change. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
How do you mark forums read on mobile (short of hamburger=>View Full Site=>go to the main forum index=>scroll down=>Mark All Forums Read=>scroll down again=>View Mobile Site)?
There's another forum I read that has semi-infinite session lengths where nothing is ever marked as read unless you explicitly mark it as such, and maybe I'm in the minority here, but I hate it. (Beyond that, another forum has long session lengths and no ability to mark forums read, which is even worse.) I tend to open everything I'm interested in reading in multiple tabs, though, so I don't really get confused about what I've read and what I haven't. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
I'm surprised the mobile version doesn't have the same option, but I only browse this forum on my PC.
I do the same (opening everything I want to read in multiple tabs), but only per subforum. I.e. I'll go to 'Other' and open the threads I want to read in separate tabs. Then I'll read those and then go to 'TV Talk' and repeat. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Thank you for enabling the tables again!

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
There is a mark in the "new posts" search that shows which threads were not read but not updated from your last visit:
The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts. and everything above that is probably what we are used to as "new" posts. Of course, you'll have to go page by page to find it. |
Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Wikis seem to have been randomly inserted in all the wrong threads. I worked on fixing a few of them, but it’d be nice to hear the official word on what is happening with them. Will they auto-corrects some how? Are they screwed forever? Is it safe to create and edit them now?

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
Personally, I'm a big fan of the way that unread posts are now working, once I got past the initial glut of everything from the beginning of the year being marked as unread.

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
I get that but I like being able to quickly see how many threads had activity since the previous day. Now I actually have to pay attention when going through new posts rather than just seeing the 2-3 pages of threads I'm interested in.

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
If left as it is you should see only threads with new posts in bold. Threads with old posts will appear, but not be in bold. If you choose 'New Posts' you get a page with only those threads that are in bold.
With this current configuration, I either: a) mark the forums read after reading all the threads I'm interested in or b) I leave it as I don't care if threads I'm not interested in show up as bold. It doesn't matter to me if they show that they have new posts, if I'm not interested in them, anyway. Most commonly, I've been doing a), while on the Steve Hoffman music forums, I tend to do b). |

Guys, as I said above, the unread posts may be a little weird for the next couple days, while cookies get flushed out.

Trevor, I addressed this. Please send me any instances you see of wikiposts being wrong. I have to do it manually.
I don’t have access to a database of what threads had wikis, but here is one that is messed up; https://forum.dvdtalk.com/blu-ray-ba...ga-thread.html |

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread
In the Announcement thread at the top of this (and other) boards, it states " Infinite Scroll: Continuous page loading and sticky navigation bars"
I've taken care of the Infinite Scroll (didn't like it), but what about the sticky navigation bars? Is there a setting which will improve responsiveness while navigating this site? Or am I stuck with waiting a few additional seconds each time I navigate to a different forum/thread? |
