That's the problem. A user can create a thread about a movie on disc but not mention which format is on. On top of that it's a waste of time clicking on the thread and finding out it's not the format you thought he was talking about.

Maybe it should be a requirement that they need to put format brackets on the topic like so:

[DVD]
[BLU]
[4K]

I’m not worried about that for threads created post-merge — another mod or I could always just edit titles for clarity, if needed — but for discussions prior to that, it could be messier.

Buy 8k.com. Port all DVDTalk items to forum.8k.com. Hot link everything. In 2027 DVDTalk could be relevant again!

Why? What does it gain to merge them? There are far more serious issues here than that.

The thought/hope is that consolidating forums will spur more discussion than having everything segmented into a bunch of smaller forums.

This is far from the only change in the works on the site. I've compiled a pretty massive list for Internet Brands to help us work through. I just felt that merging forums demanded input from users in a way that fixing bugs, removing/hiding outdated content, etc. does not.

The past few years, I just use the ‘new posts’ button. This whole site is essentially one sub-forum.

So if I post a thread about brain surgery videos, you'll read it no matter what? Just because it's "New"

Let me chime in. What we could do is keep the old forum separate, but close it. It would exist as a legacy forum and all new releases could just go into the main HD Talk (we can put a note that ALL new releases go in there, regardless of format). Anyone that wanted to find an old DVD thread could search the DVD Talk forum, just not post new stuff.

I'll see it, and I'll click it if the title interests me (I also browse exclusively using new posts).

Yep, that's exactly what I do. I wish I could hide the politics forum though. There is an option to do that in the User CP, but it doesn't look like it's setup.

This link will get New Posts, but exclude the Politics forum:

Code:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=47
Just make a bookmark for that URL for yourself. If you want to exclude any additional forums, you can add them with a comma separation. For example, this link would exclude Other, Politics, and Sports:

Code:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=9,47,31

I've also been using the New Posts button for a while now. It helps me see interesting things in Otter or other forums I might ordinarily miss.

But I still think there should be a single "discs" forum, to cover DVD, Bluray, 4K, etc. There's not enough enough traffic to have them separated anymore.

A user tries to find information on a particular dvd title. He would have to search two forums for it?

The existing DVD sub-forum regularly sees new visitors/posters from Google searches. We always have new posters coming from Google searches to the DVD forum because DVDtalk's DVD forum is usually included on the first page of search results for many DVD topics. So they often go there first when hitting this site.

I'm not sure Google sending new visitors that may have never visited the site to a locked legacy forum is a good idea.

I would not support closing the DVD Talk forum. Alot of people still post in there, a lot of people still browse that forum for new stuff. That would be like closing the whole reason this forum as a whole was created in the first place.

Re: Merging "DVD Talk" and "HD Talk" into a single forum

So each release is going to have three separate threads in a merged forum? When I go to Blu-ray .com looking for discussion on a UHD disc I go to their 4K section. When I look for a regular Blu-ray I go to their BD section. DVD has been dead to me for 12 years. I took them all off my shelves long ago.

Then again, I only visit the Movie, TV, Video Games, Other, and Politics forums on here for the most part anyway.

That's the way it should be. It's much more organized that way.

No. There aren't separate threads in HD Talk when a Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the same movie come out the same day, and I wouldn't expect that to be any different if DVD were added into the mix as well.

With a site that gets the staggering amount of traffic/posts that blu-ray.com does, a large number of forums makes sense. This is no longer the case at DVD Talk. I wish that we had the users to support even further division than we have now, but I fear that we’d be spreading relatively few eyeballs even further.

...but this isn’t a done deal, and this is a poll/discussion for a reason, so I would definitely encourage anyone who’s not wild about the idea to say so.

75% of my collection is still DVD, I still buy them when the deal is too good to pass up. I buy BD/DVD combos and BDs whenever possible but DVD is still a large part of my collection, many of them are not even available on blu-ray.

Combining forums might help steer more participation in the Movie Challenges.

Re: Merging "DVD Talk" and "HD Talk" into a single forum

If they do get merged.it would be helpful to have a color coded identifier immediately in the thread title
for example

*DVD*'Ethel & Ernest' (2016) Raymond Briggs graphic novel movie
*Blu-ray*Piranha II: The Spawning - 7/31/18
*UHD*Oldboy: 4K UHD (?/?/2018)

even when the format is indicated in the title, a color code would make tuning out the info you don't need a lot easier.

Re: Merging "DVD Talk" and "HD Talk" into a single forum

Agreed with Paul’s suggestion. I’m not entirely a fan of the forums being combined (mostly just the OCD in me doesn’t like the idea) but I can sort of see where it makes sense. There needs to be color coding or some way to differentiate DVD from Blu-ray from 4K/UHD if this is done.

Re: Merging "DVD Talk" and "HD Talk" into a single forum

Looking over this stuff, there is definitely some things that can be cleaned out and eliminated. My FAQ thread is pretty obsolete. The threads and even sub-forum regarding cases and covers is worthless. The last post was 8 years ago.
