Re: Mobile version
The ads are a little annoying, but it reads a lot better than the full version on a phone. I like the button at the bottom to switch back and forth from the mobile to the full version easily.

I agree that it should go to the last post not the first post when entering a thread. In addition, some areas don't work at all, like the streaming thread keeps resolving to the home page. Seems there are some kinks to work out. Glad we are upgrading and moving ahead. Here's to hoping these are just growing pains and the mobile version will increase traffic & use....

Now if it could only take me to the last post immediately instead of just starting me off at the first post when I click on the thread.
Second, the 'view full site' button does nothing for me. It simply refreshes the page. Third, there needs to be a drop down menu to hop between forums. Clicking 'home' then to a 'discussion' forum on to the 'sub forum' is beyond cumbersome and annoying. So as of right now dvdtalk is dead to me on my WP. Like many others, I'm on this site constantly so to utterly kill my way to get on the site sucks ass. How about just defaulting to the normal site until the kinks are worked out? Needs some serious work. |

This seems like a no brainer. 5+ clicks to get to the last page of a thread is ridiculous. (click thread, page, text box, page #, enter) Very efficient. :sarcasm: On the full site you simply click the page number of the thread. A single click. I don't think 'last post' wouldn't be optimal either. It needs to go to the newest post from the last time you visited the site. Second, the 'view full site' button does nothing for me. Yes sir.

Re: Mobile version
I'm having the same issues on Windows Phone 8.1 as well.

Note 4.
HATE IT. Don't need it on my N4. Is there a way to make default stay at full when I first go on the site? |
Re: Mobile version
I've used the mobile site extensively on Android and WP8.1 now.
WP8.1 formatting is broken. Completely. It doesn't look anything like it does on Android, and is functionally useless. That aside, I like the look/feel on Android, but I can see why it would be unnecessary on a Note or Gargantuan or whatever Samsung's newest model is. :) I was happy with it on the Nexus 5 I was using. Things worth noting, I guess: - No avatars - No signatures - No "open last page" link directly from the thread title. It's good (again, on Android. On WP8.1, it's unusable. Period.), it's solid, so I don't want to downplay the effort that was surely involved in getting it up and running. I know people here (myself included) kind of hate the forum I'm about to mention, but NeoGAF has what I would consider a "perfect" mobile site. It works flawlessly even on WP8.1. In particular, YouTube embeds are actually playable on that site, whereas here, I only see big black boxes saying "this video cannot be played" That's more of a WP8.1 compatibility problem than anything else, though. I realize that that forum most definitely runs on entirely different software, so making it look and work like that is not going to happen... but for me, that's what mobile forums should strive to be. IMO, of course. |

Re: Mobile version
^ On WP8.1, that's broken. Sort of. At the top of the page, the only option is to do what Corvin describes. At the bottom of the page, you can do what you're suggesting, but that includes scrolling to the bottom just to do it, which is a pain when there's 25 posts per page, sometimes filled with walls of text, photos, videos, etc.

Re: Mobile version
If you go to a thread from the "New Posts" list option, it starts you on the last page.

Re: Mobile version
The mobile skin does not work on Windows phones right now. Sorry about that. Just use the full site. We'll try to work this out in the future.
|
Re: Mobile version
For me (and I assume any other WP8.1 users like Corvin and printerati), the "View Full Site" button doesn't even work. It just reloads the mobile skin. So, on our phones, it's the broken mobile site, or nothing at all. "Just use the full site" is no longer an option.
Even when I go into the browser settings and force it to load full sites by default. Still the broken mobile site. I'm not going to suggest removing the mobile skin for everyone else until it gets worked out (that would be dumb), but at least figure it out so WP8.1 doesn't TRY to load the mobile skin, just as it was a week ago. I'm fine with using the full site on my phone, if, y'know, the site would allow it. |

Re: Mobile version
For what it's worth, the version of IE in the Windows 10 Tech Preview fixes the issues with the mobile site. but... you have to void your warranty and risk bricking your phone to get it. ;) If the two other folks using WP8.1 decide to go that route, don't bother with the Project Spartan browser. It freezes... a lot... at least on my 1020.
At least the admins don't have to worry about "fixing" the site for the three of us now (like they were going to...) they can just tell us to wait for the final release of W10. ;) |

Re: Mobile version
There's deifnitely something else going on with Windows phones (I use one too) for about a week straight bing search (Search glass button on your windows phone) was not displaying results properly - for example, if you searched for facebook.com it would show the link to it almost at the end of the page so you would have to scroll all the way to the bottom to get it - sometimes it would not include it at all - that has sice been fixed but viewing this site has not - I too just get a page refresh when clicking "View full site"
It may or may not be a site issue but I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft jacked something up (also, I don't use any other forums, well...not extensively and definitely not enough to where I have tested them on my phone to see if the same thing happens). |
Re: Mobile version
My first comments on this thread. My phone is a few years old (Symbian 3rd Ed., FP2), hence the smaller screen. I see a blue "banner" across the top that does absolutely nothing, but grabs a great deal of space. The rectangle on the far right (whatever it's supposed to be) just reloads the page.
http://user.pa.net/~tao/dvdtalk1.jpg Scroll to the bottom, and that ad (when it loads) partly overlaps the "View Full Site" link. But the link does work...with Javascript enabled. http://user.pa.net/~tao/dvdtalk2.jpg My initial suggestions: 1) Make the "View Full Site" link work WITHOUT Javascript. I tend to browse with it disabled anyway, and am reasonably certain this would fix the Windows Phone glitches. Make sure this link can be bookmarked, so visitors can save it if they choose. 2) Obviously fix the bottom ad overlap problem. 3) The blue banner does nothing with Javascript on or off. (What is it supposed to do?) I do see one relevant JS error, which might be vaguely helpful. I don't know if your "mobile one" framework is home grown or off-the-shelf, but thankfully the error appears in the middle of script and not on line 1. :) I would greatly prefer the banner not render at all with Javascript disabled, since I have doubts it's usable in that state anyway. http://user.pa.net/~tao/dvdtalk3.jpg |
Re: Mobile version
Still no movement on the WP8 front?
|
Re: Mobile version
^ doubt it. W10 is coming this summer (on phones by end of year, supposedly). The new browser on W10 fixes the issues found in WP8 (except that it now crashes all the time, but that's a separate issue...).
