Mod Request: Name Change

Yes, I know these are only granted in special situations. Yes, I requested one a few years ago...but this is different.

Just completed an ugly divorce with a vile woman who basically slept around town with about 14,000 other guys. My username = her initials, mine, and our anniversary date. Would really rather not have myself defined by that set of facts anywhere in my life, much less on DVDTalk.

I'd like to change it to 'chibul', which is what I use pretty much everywhere else. I'm perfectly willing to have the whole "Artist Formerly Known as Abrg923" or whatever it is done.

Hoping you'll agree to my request. It honestly is a special set of circumstances. Thanks.

they should only do it on the condition that you will post her pics and/or her phone number

One is too many.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

I don't think that fits our criteria for a name change. The name you're requesting was already taken anyway.

argh923 05-03-12 05:27 PM

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Is there any way I'd be permitted to create a new account, then, with a different name? I really don't want this handle...surely you can understand my reasoning for that. Essentially 13 years of bad memories are associated with it.

X 05-03-12 05:33 PM

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

No.

argh923 05-03-12 05:39 PM

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Also, in looking at the fact that that username is taken...that's my profile. Let me explain.

If you look at my very first post, I mention in there that I couldn't find the "new topic" button. I don't know if I was just being dumb that day or if new topics couldn't be created by brand new members, so at some point a couple of months later (see my join date on my profile is October 2005) I created this account and used it from that point on.

If you look at this post under chibul's account, I mention being at this wrestling event for a specific incident - something I just referenced yesterday in this post as well.

So that's actually my old profile. :)

Not sure how that comes into play or if it affects things...I'm just asking that you consider this here. This is a username I really want to shed myself of, as it's regarding a period of my life that I need to put in my past and get behind me. I don't know what the "criteria" for name changes are, but I would hope that given my individual situation this could at least be discussed and considered, rather than just coldly shot down.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Then it sure is unfortunate that you signed up multiple accounts which is contrary to our rules.

argh923 05-03-12 05:49 PM

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

...which I didn't know about at the time since I was brand new to the forum and confused...and it was six and a half years ago. You're going to punish me for that? You can clearly see I haven't been posting under two accounts all this time - it's not like I've been abusing the policy. I'd completely forgotten about that account until you mentioned it - I thought it was weird that someone else used that handle, so I looked and it turned out to be me.

Surely you can understand where I'm coming from here.

If the chibul account is yours, why not just start using that one?

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

As I acknowledged in my opening post. The reasoning has certainly changed, and that too was years ago.

I'm pretty sure if I try to do that, they'll suspend me for having multiple accounts.

Because both accounts will be shut down if he does that.

Just change your signature to: "My username is dedicated to InsertEx'sName and what we will forever share; yours initials + my initials + how many times I banged your sister.

PS: Have fun calling all the guys you slept with last year cuz your sister gave us herpes."

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

I vote just let him use the old one. Who cares?

It doesn't seem like that unusual of a tale. I did something similar at CAG. Signed up in '03 to check the place out and didn't stick around. Came back a few years later, oblivious to my previous visit and signed up and ended up sticking around. Realized a couple years later that I had two accounts. Brought it to the attention of mods and they let me keep the one I wanted and closed the other. They don't moderate the forums for shit, but they were pretty helpful for me.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Yeah, I really don't get this forum's big issue with name changes. Other forums let you do it pretty much at any point. I'm personally fine with what I have but I think it's sorta dumb you have to pretty much beg for someone to let you change a username. Plus the reasoning behind his seems pretty understandable.

Username is like a tattoo... choose wisely and don't use anything that's part of a relationship :)

This name change request seems way more legit than the time I quit smoking weed for, like, 3 months and switched over to what I've got now (which I don't really like).

Thanks...I appreciate that. X stated that my request "doesn't meet our criteria". A search of the forum only provided this post, which states that the criteria for members above 1,000 posts is simply that they're considered on a case-by-case basis, as well as Benedict's post in that very thread, which states that changes have been made for people above 1,000 posts "in line with said rules". So I'm not really sure how my request doesn't meet the criteria of "we'll consider on a case-by-case basis".

All I'm asking for is consideration on what is a very sensitive area for me. This is not me attempting to troll, or be a negative poster, or cause a chain reaction, or really anything of the sort.

 I'm guessing you pissed in X's Wheaties last time you requested a name change.

Nobody knows who abrg923 is any way. Give the poor guy a break. Maybe chibul will be more fun.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Hmm...I both use my real name and am a former DVD Talk reviewer...mabye I qualify. However, I don't care if people know who I am in real life.

I'm guessing they don't do it because it's easier not to make any exceptions than it is to constantly get those "well, you did it for "x", why can't you do it in my case..." requests all the time.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Ditto here. Of course I know that "Quite a bit of modding and administration necessarily is done behind the scenes", and I know that modding isn't done by popular vote, but this seems like a reasonable request with a reasonable justification. Additionally, his current handle isn't exactly a 'name' or word that flows off the tongue or (to me) is easily referenced mentally, so the concern of the 'board personality' might not be as relevant. To most people, other than him, his name is an almost random set of letters and numbers. He is not a number, he is a free man!

Out of curiousity, how many name change requests occur monthly/yearly, both for sub-1000-post accounts and 1000+ post accounts? Is it that prevalent? Is the membership here simply an amorphous horde of constantly changing usernames?

Cardsfan111 05-06-12 01:52 PM

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

A creative solution could be to have Jules start up a thread, "Why is abrg923 so stupid?" That's been proven to be an effective method in getting someone's name changed.

None taken. I know some people from the VG forum but outside of that I haven't spent a lot of time in Otter...plus I took about two years away from the forum.

They do make some exceptions though...KillerCannibal being one. I just want the nods to at least discuss it...based on X's initial response I don't feel that occurred.

Re: Mod Request: Name Change

Good lord, this is silly. Is there any way to just voluntarily close the unwanted account so he can use chibul since then it wouldn't be "multiple" accounts? Or just ban arbrg923 and let him use chibul.

I feel for you, man, I went through something similar about 4 years ago and my ex's initials were in my passwords. Those were something I typed a lot so it took a lot to unlearn them
