Is tinyurl banned?

I tried to make a post with some tinyurl's to save space, and when I went to preview it, the forum stripped out all mentions of tinyurl, so it looked like "http:///ddkmru".

I understand that tinyurl can be used as a redirection tool and therefore be used for malicious purposes. But it's also good for shortening some of these gigantic URLs that are now popping up.

Any feedback would be appreciated, as I need to know what's accepted and what is not for an automation tool I'm writing for a thread.

That first sentence of your second paragraph should be all the explanation you need.

-edit- it appears it is. interesting. however I do not know why. I would assume it's due to spam. the word itself isn't blocked but when you add the .com and the / it gets blocked.

Exactly.

It had become a favorite tool of spammers who were trying to circumvent our blocking the sites and parts of URLs they were spamming.

You can always use the hyperlink tag so that you're not showing entire super-long URLs.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

He's concerned about the character limit these posts are restricted to, not the way they appear to the reader.

Just exactly how many characters is he trying to post?

Far more than the limit: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/video-game-...al-thread.html

We run into this from time to time in the VG forum. I've seen some other threads encounter it over the years too.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

Why not just use the [yt] tag?

With that many, maybe it would be messy, bringing up each one.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

That would embed the videos into the post and load up hundreds of flash player instances simultaneously.

He's working on an off-site solution, so I'm not really sure what the point of the original question is unless it's about a totally unrelated thread or topic.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

I'm still curious what the actual limit is, I did a test with over 100,000 characters and it seemed to go through just fine. Once you're reaching that many it may be worthwhile to split it up into separate posts.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

^ You're getting into touchy subjects with Shag here He's already got the first 3 posts in that thread. I don't know the actual limit, but I know I reached it myself in a similar thread about 2 years ago.

Again, he's going off-site with this information and going to embed it with an iframe, so I don't really know what the point is. I'll let him answer for himself again.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

The reason is I ask is I was trying to make things easier on myself (even doing off-site) and already have about 1500+ tinyurl links to information.

I can go back through and grab the real links, but it'll be a pain in the ass and take a little bit of time. Guess I should've checked that it worked before I went through that trouble. Never thought it would be a problem though.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

Does the board censor what you put in the iframe? I assumed that your off-site content would be safe from this board's editing as long as the url to your content was safe.

Sounds like you assumed that too and got bit.

I haven't checked that.

I've been trying to figure out how to do dynamic HTML tables to prettify things, but haven't gotten there yet.

I just found out today when I tried to post up the stuff for this week in a new post with not only the youtube links, but marketplace links as well.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

My guess is that you're fine on your own page. Just post a sample and see if it works.

Re: Is tinyurl banned?

We don't allow iframes for a similar reason. They're often used for malicious purposes.

I'll have to talk with IB about that.
