Contextual Advertising on DVD Talk
Contextaul advertising refers to the practice of underlining particular words on web pages so that when you mouse over them, an ad pops up. Typically, the ad is ostensibly related to the underliend word, but it almost never is in practice.
And it appears to have come to DVDTalk.
Contextual advertising is shit. It will make this website unreadable. Kill it now. Kill it dead.

I want to see more ads! I want corporations to sponsor whole swaths of users. I want to have to click on 2 or 3 ads before I can read a thread or a post!
Ads! Ads! Ads!
Soon, you'll drive everyone away from the forums and have ads posting and then responding to ads! It will be glorious!

Haven't seen any threads with it. Link?
edit: Just went to that thread in Politics and the pop-up isn't there for me.
Maybe they're just "encouraging" certain members to leave?

I too have seen this and many times I never give the site a chance when I see these I can't imagine that using these outweighs the drop in traffic because this is such a bad idea.

I want to say I saw them in a thread on the Video Game Talk forum too, but I can't remember which one. All the ads were for Eureka.
Regardless, they seem to be gone now. Looks like our swift action has saved the forum.

A resounding "fuck no!" from me as well. I thought I caught some adware, but didn't see it on other sites. Make it go the fuck away, DVDTalk.

I'm sure the new owners don't care either way, but this will end up being the end of my eight or nine year streak with this site (by far the longest I've ever checked one place religiously...). It's not bad now but the more these ads come up in posts the more likely I am to move elsewhere, it's happened with other sites and it looks like it's where this one is going.

Reminds me of the time i put ads in the first post of every thread. "Ad-Post Gate". IB has been pretty receptive to the issues of the community, so hopefully they'll see how much these contextual ads are despised (they're just up there with pop-ups and interstitals).
Now if they'd only upgrade the damn forum software!

Actually I hate these ads more then pop-ups and also G!'s most horrible try at first post ads (sorry boss). And the thread you were thinking about in vgtalk was the "how many band games do we need?" thread someone was talking about they are a fad like WW2 games and WW2 was the trigger for a vacuum

I think what is annoying, is that all of this runs in contrast to what IB said in their initial comments. If you are going to SPAM your own forum, at least own up to it.
