this place is being too much with its whole "family friendly" thing. I could maybe see the photoshop thing but still ridiculous but dave's threat. I mean come on now. all this and you still have links to adult reviews and all kinds of "questionable" (for some not me) covers. I guess the corporate identity means more now.

Yeah, this is getting ridiculous. Since this place has always been pretty secretive about where policies are coming from and why, I can only wildly speculate that IB is laying down some sort of new "no NSFW" crap. We have always had NSFW stuff posted here with nary a problem. Porn may be one thing, but the stuff that's being edited out and threads that are being closed now are about as far away from porn as you can get.

Porn sites are now family friendly

Removing the Hulk images is a little ridiculous.

but even the dirty jokes thread started by dave that one makes less sense. who's next, drink-man? is it going to have to be grape-drink-man.

I think we'd better all say "fuck" as many times as possible before Internet Brands yanks that away from us as well.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck .

I'm guessing the Hulk pic had something to do with the following Amazon books?

Spoiler:

To touch on a point that Minor Threat just made... I don't really care who owns the site, I'd just like to see some simple, useful things done around here. The smilie thing stands out to me because I can't believe the explanation given -- what, really? No one can figure out a way to add in new smilies? When did that happen? I've been all over the Internet, to all kind of forums, and virtually every forum out there has a significantly better set of smilies than we have. I mean, the goddamn Teletubbies Fan Forum has better smilies -- the Gay Furries Forum has better smilies -- what is the issue here?

And weren't the new owners supposed to invest in some decent server technology so this place wouldn't drag so much? Can't they implement a better search function? Can't they settle on a goddamn NSFW policy a bit quicker than this???

You know what this is? This is Corporate America taking us for granted. Let's not kid ourselves here -- Internet Brands and DVDTalk.com aren't doing us a favor by allowing us to post here -- we supply 99% of the content that makes this site run, that makes them money, that puts this place on the map. I think with Geoff we all felt like it was a mom-and-pop shop and we were all in this together, but now that the forum has gone corporate, we're all just numbers to them, a commodity.

Well, I say we change those numbers just a bit. I say we pick one day -- maybe this Monday, May 5th -- and refuse to come here. No content, no page hits, just a big sucky number to sap down their spreadsheets and remind them that, ultimately, this site belongs to all of us.

Who's with me? What? Anyone? No?

Can we make it May 9? I'm off work that day.

I am personally pulling for a huge list of do's and don't ala the "bro code". Perhaps they could sell the hard copy version on Amazon. They could have 2 versions. One with a family friendly cover and one with an Xcritic version. Only the Xcritic version would have rotation on this site. I would also like to see an auto filter which replaces all uses of the F-word with a Shack-Fu logo. Cheapassgamer does this with great success.

Man, this is getting stupid. Especially given that we were told we'd have some grand edict, but were waiting for monday for the IB people to show up. Let's see....it's Wednesday.

Has any of this been done by their direction, or have the mods just figured this is what they want?

I know we are asking a lot to actually have some rules that are coherent, given that 1/3 of the threads in this place are as bad as some of those closed, but let's try to get something written down.

And censor the word "nipple" while we're at it.

Seriously, this whole thing sucks. People even spoilerize anything that may be offensive, and it gets removed anyway. (Yes, Hulk, I'm talkin 'bout yo thang.) ANd the link to xcritic doesn't help. Xcritic SUCKS, plain and simple. Nothing like the former adult forum here--just a corporate-created mishmash of uninteresting pseudo-posts, and not an adult-rated discussion community at all.

The hypocrisy really bugs me too. Most of the "unsuitable" material I see on Otter is in the DVD ads up top. Hey, if you're gonna move every remotely naught y thing to xcritic, howzabout taking those smutty ads off Otter and moving them to xcritic too? (Which will, by the way, guarantee that no one will see them, but that';s besides the point.)

I'm curious to see the impending 'new policy," but if it's as stupid as I expect it to be, I'll be looking for another fun forum to actually discuss and joke around freely. At least we'll have Otter for a while so we can all tell each other where the NEW forum to hang out is, once we find it.

Again, this sucks. I don't even see why this whole issue started up. Otter was not out of control, nor stepping over any reasonable bounds.

I wish I had a family. Then we could all sit down and watch the Zodiac Rapist movie that DVDTalk keeps advertising. That would certainly be friendly.

Maybe it's time for an otter farm offshoot of DVD talk. I think what IB may have a problem with is implementing across the board policies for a place with such divergent subforums as this one.

The Battleground Europe forums experienced the same situation....the rules became so restrictive the off-topic folks created their own forum.

The mods have come up with some rules that IB hasn't approved yet. They are a little relaxed right now and may get tightened in the future so don't take these as concrete yet.

The dirty jokes thread has been opened. As has the Hulk thread. Someone will have to add the image back in.

For now, keep any possibly offensive images spoilerized with a Possibly NSFW warning.

Yeah, well, we've seen the carnage that can occur when a group of Otters goes off and creates a new forum...

Ok, I just looked at Internet Brands website for the first time. They own 68 websites. DVDTalk is listed under the 'travel & leisure' category, which has the following description:

Seriously, is it of any surprise if the mods aren't getting any real direction as to how to proceed? I can't imagine our site being anything more than a blip on IB's radar. Hell, JohnMcG from IB joined back in October to post twice and then disappear from the site entirely. Let's see what he said back then...

I'd say the crackdown on content falls under the 'big change' category, but who knows how IB defines such a thing.

If the recent changes are the start of a trend, I bet this place looks dramatically different a year from now. Take away this user-base's ability to swear, make dirty jokes and candidly discuss adult (non-pornographic) topics and a lot of people are either going to leave or push the boundaries until they're banned. It's a shame, considering what a great little community this has been for so many years.

I have added the images back in. I had them saved on my PC because I loved them so much.

In short, the fun has returned.
