Aargh. Hate it.

lukewarmwater 04-19-07 04:55 PM

If I go see the hoax, will you please get rid of the ads?

BravesMG 04-19-07 04:58 PM

I'm also having problems anytime someone is quoting another post and the ad is in the thread. I'm using IE7. The "quote" header is above the post and then the rest of the space is blank where the ad is, and the quote starts underneath the ad.

Th0r S1mpson 04-19-07 05:09 PM

I thought this was a bug. Man, it's not good. I can't help but attribute it to the person posting. It looks like it's their avatar or something they are linking to.

For the record, I will never click on any of those ads in someone's message if that helps in the decision.

The ads between posts were not nearly as annoying.

And yes, I still want to pay for no ads at all. :)

So that's another flaw with the in post ads as they'll be more annoying to some.

How can you guys not have noticed that the old ads did the exact same thing. They appeared between posts 24-25, and between 25-26. It's always assumed the default page breakdown. I guess these really are more obtrusive if you never noticed before :)

That said, I prefer the ads in the posts <b>provided</b> they are offset in some way so that it is clear they are site advertisements. Otherwise it seems like it is part of my post. Most sites handle this by wrapping ads in a div of a certain color (usually gray) with the words "Advertisement" in some way above the ad.

Like this (floated to the right, of course):

<div style="width: 315px; height: 275px; background-color: #666666; color: #FFFFFF; text-align: center; vertical-align: middle; font-size: 10px"><div style="padding: 3px 0 3px 0">Advertisement</div><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/dabrink/banner_300x250.jpg" />
</div>

Agreed.

It seems that the people that are complaining the most and say that they hate it are the ones that the ads are placed in!

For the record I LOVE IT! not really

What is the deal with the always rumored ad-free premium DVDTalk? Even if it had to be $50/year, at least we would have the option to not have to view these annoying-as-hell ads.

I know things have to be paid for, but it seems like things are getting constantly worse with the advertisements (first the HD-DVD ads and now this). It would be nice to have a choice to pay and not view ads.

At the very least, a premium version would keep down the bitching (because at least then we would all have a choice to pay or suffer the ads).

smashthesymbols 04-19-07 05:23 PM

Another vote for ads between the posts rather than inside them. This is just a terrible idea, they look awful and they're extremely distracting. I thought for sure my browser was broken.

I noticed it before, but didn't think about it being due to the page settings (I just assumed there were supposed to be multiple ones per page). :D

And yes, those were much less obtrusive, and really didn't bother me much even appear 2 or 3 times per page.

They were annoying like all ads, but the bills have to be paid to keep the site up so I can live with most ads. The loud as flash ads are way too much, and these in post ads are pretty close to crossing that line as well.

This is DVD Talk, not HD-DVD Talk. Fuck all that newfangled technology.

tommyp007 04-19-07 05:47 PM

No sir. I don't care for the new ad placement at all.

El Scorcho 04-19-07 05:51 PM

ugh.. NOT ENOUGH LOUD SOUND IS COMING OUT OF THEM. MORE SOUND FTW!!

Is this the norm or are you an outlier?

Beats me. But judging from the site being busiest from 9-5 I'd say its the norm at least here. :D

Peep 04-19-07 06:32 PM

I like the new ad placemenmt. It makes them easier to read.

I just wish I didn't see the same ads over and over again.

Kittydreamer 04-19-07 06:36 PM

I thought it was bug, too. Geoff, can I send you a check or money order or something? I'd gladly pay for membership as I know others would, too. I know you're having a hard time finding a "paypal" type thing but in the mean time, I know there are lots of us that would gladly send you a check/money order.

These adds in the post are distracting and make the page look weird.

Um, they do look weird like that, but it seems like something I'd just get used to. It doesn't bug me as much as some other folks.

edit... I changed my mind. A few of the ads really are annoying.

Th0r S1mpson 04-19-07 07:41 PM

Geoff-
I'll send you cash if you turn off all ads for my account. Forget PayPal and their porn policy. I'll even mail you some beer if you prefer it.

Your myspace page is filled with screaming music, flashy sections and waaay too much information. Just like DTalk.

AudioWizard 04-19-07 07:52 PM

I'll mail a check too.

Kittydreamer 04-19-07 08:20 PM

So that's three so far....anyone else wanna mail Geoff a check? :D

VinVega 04-19-07 08:23 PM

I liked the ads after the post, not in them. They're catching my attention equally I feel, but it's making reading the first and last post very annoying with the squishing of the text.

NCMojo 04-19-07 08:26 PM

Geoff, I'd be happy to collect all of these checks for you.
