Looking through some threads just now, it looks like Geoff may have tweaked it to only be in the first post recently.

If so that is an improvement that I could live with. But still prefer the between posts ads as before.

Clearly it doesn't take into account the posts per page settings of individual users? I had 3 in the 1st page of this thread.

I've only seen them at the first and last of a full page of posts in a thread so I guess it is assuming the default page view.

So that's another flaw with the in post ads as they'll be more annoying to some.

First only seems like a decent compromise if in post ads have to stick around. Annoying, but as X said you only read it once. First and last will cause problems with the number of posts view and having it in the last post is annoying anyway as that is what you click on a thread to read many times.

I was used to the ad between the first and second posts. This actually made me think there was something wrong with my browser. I've never seen an ad inside a post on a forum before.

I suppose I'll get used to it to, but you might want to pass along to the advertisers that I would never be more likely to purchase a product from an ad in a post vs. an ad elsewhere on the page. In fact, I'm less inclined because it feels FAR more intrusive.

Ads IN threads were a test, too. That never went away. It never really bothered me, though. But these ads do.

Aside from the fact that they make the posts they are placed in harder to read, I really just think they're inappropriate- they cross a line. Posts should never have anything placed in them that the poster didn't put there, unless by moderator action (which is always clearly marked).

yeah another vote for hating them. Maybe if they were rectangle banners at the bottom of the posts and not giant squares that alter the format of the text.

I see three of them on the first page of this thread (I have my page view set to 40 posts per page). One in the OP, then one each in posts #25 and #26.

That said, I prefer the ads in the posts <b>provided</b> they are offset in some way so that it is clear they are site advertisements. Otherwise it seems like it is part of my post. Most sites handle this by wrapping ads in a div of a certain color (usually gray) with the words "Advertisement" in some way above the ad.

Like this (floated to the right, of course):

My guess is that ads inside posts have been shown to have a higher "click through" percentage. This is probably due more to accidental clicks than actual interest.

Of that you can be sure. Which of course means that website design is now about tricking people into generating revenue rather than serving its patrons. Really quite sad.

Indeed. The internet is declining pretty rapidly in general for such reasons IMO. I hardly use it at all at home now...only get on when I want to look up something specific, no more random goofing for the most part.

Random goofing and DVD Talk posting is largely limited to being bored at work these days. :D
