Pointless bumps of old threads

Seems to be a trend of people bumping long dead threads for no reason lately. Pretty annoying, right up their with the "phantom bump" problem we had years back that was banned.

Here are two examples of 2+ year old threads being bumped in movie talk for no reason (on the same movie as well).

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=381525
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=345198

And one in sports that was bumped just to post a lame picture.

Not a major issue I suppose, but it is annoying to click on a thread expecting new discussion on an old topic, just to see some pointless post someone added to an old thread.

Ummm... Your sports link is the same as your second movie link.

I'll delete when you fix ;)

Though, to be fair, the Pete Rose thread (assuming that is what you meant) was only bumped from a 2 month hiatus.

Fixed the link, guess the copy didn't work the first time. :D

Yep, the sports thread wasn't dead as long, but put it in as well as it's the same behavior--searching out a dead thread to bump it for something not related to renewing the discussion there.

Again, no big deal, just a pet peeve I thought I'd point out in hopes something could be done if it bothered others as well. But I guess not. :D

doesn't bother me.

sometimes I enjoy visiting the past.

if you report the thread, usually a mod will fix ..personally, I just delete the comment that bumped it and all ones after, so it goes back into the abyss..

But then there's no way of knowing whether it's a pointless bump or whether it was bumped legitimately to continue the conversation or to expand it with something new (as does happen).

Especially in movie talk as someone could bump an old review thread to add their thoughts on the film, which I like to see if it's a film I like. But it's pointless when they bump it like those two American History X threads for no reason whatsoever.

Cool, I'll just report and request that from now on with these bumps.

There's three links above you can take care of. ;)

Gallant Pig 01-12-06 10:56 PM

Did you report them?

Nope, as I wasn't aware there was a system to deal with them until pilots post, and figured it would be redundant to report them since they're already listed here.

Don't want to bug you mods too much!

I've bookmarked this thread so I can bump it in 2007. Thank you!

I thought this thread was going to be about a certain member who likes to hold year-long conversations with himself about a particular female singer. Imagine my disappointment. :(

Ok you're definitely crossing the borderline with that one.

Mr. Hinkle-I saw a reverse type thing happen recently. Someone started a new thread on "Shaun of the Dead" and was berated for not bumping the old thread.

What he basically said in his new thread was "it's a great movie, does anyone like it?"

Would you say such a statement should have been bumped into the old thread as others advised? Or maybe you would have thought such a statement didn't really offer any new information and should be killed out?

It did seem to have interest to others as another 29 posts were made.

I'd say yes, bump the old thread. Would have probably generated more discussion their as it did in the new thread. Though it would have been nice for the person to have posted more detailed thoughts on the movie (i.e. why they liked it, if they were going to bump a dead thread or especially start a new one).
